Interesting to see the buildings (now Jubilee Street) in the far distance. I only remember that area in the 80’s as an open air car park with hut to pay, amongst the old foundations.

This stood on Old Shoreham Road in the ‘20s, near the Goldstone Ground, but top of Sackville Road . The poster is unclear here but I am told it read “ No Soviet Petrol Sold Here” .. Times haven’t changed much, then…

Have you got an old pic of the Vogue Cinema from Bear Road?
I’ve early childhood memories of our annual holidays in Cornwall, the early part of which was driving down Bear Road, seeing the big cinema and kind of heading towards the Old Shoreham Road.
20-25 years before the Brighton Bypass, it was the route to take heading west.

The second photo is taken between 1976 and 1983.
As kids we would climb up the steps at the side of the viaduct (presumably the steps to what was Lewes Road Halt) and run along the top of the viaduct and look over the dodgy edge.
H & S hadn't quite caught up then.

The most surprising thing about that photo is how old the balcony that sticks out from the building on the left is - I assumed it was some 70s/80s addition

104, 105 and 106 North Street, which faced downhill towards the Clock Tower, were three of the oldest houses in the town.
They were built in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Originally all three had the attic room, the extra storey of 106 being added in recent times.
Demolished in 1955. Three tiny ancient flint cottages, 101, 102 and 103, previously stood hidden from view in the space behind these houses, adjoining Haselgrove’s smithy.
