I seem to remember there being underground toilets, and also a street fire alarm facing West Street.

BTW notice the Oxford comma above. Hope the Health Secretary doesn't see it.

I think I've mentioned Mill Road and my Dad before but I'll mention it again.
Back in the day (60's or early 70's) and well before there was a bypass, Mill Road was the main road around Brighton. We'd park up close to the bridge armed with sarnies and squash and take bets with each other which lorries would get under the bridge and which would have to turn around.

Here's The Gaiety being built in 1937 (1,400 seats).

...and just before being demolished in '83

A pedant writes ....

Actually that 'before demolition' photo is before 1983 as in the background on the left of the picture you can see the Lewes Road viaduct for the old Kemptown branch line. That was demolished in 1976, ergo that photo must be '76 or earlier.

Anyway only a pedantic ******** would point that out as the photos themselves are brilliant. I always like it when I can see you've posted on this thread.

That looks like 1960 ish? I lived in Hanover Street from when I was born in 1956 until the end of 1962. I remember all the shops in that area before most of them were converted to be part of the terraced houses. There used to be five shops and a laundry in Hanover Street back then.
