Nothing is persuading the powers at be to take action on the climate crisis. That’s their point. Little media or political will to make changes. If there were there would be no need for publicity seeking actions. If one believes in the science we are screwed. Change needs to happen. It’s not, so what to do?
But that is just plain incorrect. Wind farms are being built, solar is being financially encouraged, car charging points atr springing up all over the place. I’m sure things are not happening as quickly as many would like, but change is gathering pace. The mistake now would be to alienate the majority that need to be encouraged to get on to the bandwagon ASAP.

Vandalising 55 Tufton though 👌
It does smack rather of the Anti-Nazi League who tried to demonstrate their opposition to fascism by marching on their opponents' premises and burning their books.

It isn't reasonable to agree in principle that those we disapprove of should have their property damaged. The only principle can be that we are all entitled to damage the property of our opponents, or that none of us are.

Yes, obviously.

Not enough, way too slowly. I’d encourage anybody to look at the science and follow the data. It’s terrifying.

Worth adding that private jet flights are on the up, ditto carbon emissions. Is there a thread on that? Will they be judged more favourably than climate protestors throwing soup on the frame of a famous painting?

I wonder if @sharma2508 et al is capable of conceiving the irony of being angry or worried about the consequences of taking action against climate change?

“Maybe courts ought to release such 'compelling evidence' of their integrity and rationality of their beliefs. Magistrate maybe right but it leaves a bad taste in mouths of those that suffered consequences of actions of these people.”

they like top portray their cause as like suffragette movement, its far far narrower than that. its like a campaign for married women aged over 40 in Ipswich to have the vote. even if successful, it wouldn't help address the real problem. its just disruption to ordinary people, rather than targeted at decision makers, while creating animosity to the wider cause.

My point, which I think was pretty simple, is that if any of us have a choice between buying something new or giving that money to help save lives, then we value the new possession more
Speak for yourself - many of us donate money to charity on a regular basis so less disposable income for ‘buying something new’ and have heard of ethical shopping choices? Buying something new and helping to save lives doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive:

Food and diet choices - eg Fair Trade, eating less meat
Clothes - buying from ethical retailers/sustainable fabrics(un-bleached cottons etc)
Buying products that aren’t transported from the other side of the world, supporting local retailers/producers.

Etc

o one is talking about the issue, only about how they disagree with the method of protests.
I think the mainstream media are mainly responsible for that - the protestors are talking about the issues when they are given a chance to but the media is far more interested in perpetuating the shock news value of soup being lobbed at paintings and angry drivers brawling in the street than giving airtime for the protestors to talk about climate change because ‘climate change’ is no longer hot news and people switch off.
The irony is they went out and bought a tin of mass-produced soup, without realising that factory production and distribution of food has more impact on the environment than a painting which has just sat there for the last 100
Don’t be ridiculous, they are not campaigning against the environmental impact of paintings 🙄

And none of the paintings have been damaged - they are behind glass - the shock value is just the visual of seeing the Mona Lisa with her face covered in minestrone soup or Munch’s The Scream with cream of tomato running down it.

Suffragettes are overrated.

It was the death of hundreds of thousands of men in WW1 who also couldn't vote that ultimately lead to women getting the vote.

Only one woman actually died in their efforts to get the vote.

Yes, one woman died, but over 1000 were imprisoned, some force fed when on hunger strike.
How on earth do you come to the conclusion that war dead led to the votes for women!
More people died of Spanish Flu after the war, than in the war, so did that have an effect too?

It’s getting national attention. I applaud them.

No, you completely misunderstand. If you have £300 in your pocket and you spend it on a new TV, then you cannot spend that £300 on other people. It is mutually exclusive.

You might be giving £100,000 to charity and spending £300 on a TV, but that's because you have made a personal decision not to give £100,300 to charity. But to go back to the original point I was answering, if any of us spend £300 on a TV it's because we have made a decision that we prefer to buy a new TV with that £300 than to give it to charity. It wasn't a criticism, just a statement of fact.

Think putting it on the line, nothing in it for them apart from harsher punishments from a government that feels granting an additional 170 exploration licences in UK waters is perfectly acceptable

History will be the judge, and as the planet warms we'll be asking ourselves why more wasn't done.

Absolutely. World leaders are not doing enough and those who profit from fossil fuel are actively trying to halt progress.

We will loathe ourselves for not demanding more. Protesting more. Holding politicians and oil companies to account. Why didn’t we riot? Kick down doors?

People whinging because the motor way is blocked for a couple of hours. They have no idea the “inconvenience” coming their way.
