Following on from the Madchester thread, and having just a music tour of God's own city recently, where do you lay your hat on this one?

No Hollies or the Bee Gees ?

In which case, I'll have to go for The Smiths. I think Oasis are a terribly overated band with one good Album to their name. But then again, I hated Brit Pop and everything it stood for.

Joy Division by a painfully long way.

The Smiths comfortably win it for me followed by The Stone Roses and Oasis in joint second.

Certainly not a band I am suggesting for "Best Manchester Band" but one that I was surprised not to see mentioned in this and the "Madchester" nostalgiafests. Maybe a band some of you have forgotten about (or never heard of). Definitely deserve some credit for playing a part in setting the way for "Madchester".

James.

Stone Roses, New Order, Joy Division and the Smiths all just as good for me but for the purpose of this poll James edge it - purely for the quality of their live shows.

Of the whole Madchester thing - Happy Mondays. But in terms of the best Manchester band it is almost impossible to decide between Joy Division/New Order and The Smiths.
New Order probably more culturally significant but The Smiths said more to me about my life.
