We are ONE county,cruelly separated by the jealous British Government in 1888, jealous of our history,heritage, and Sussex Pond Pudding.

If I recall correctly you can trace your family ancestry back to the middle ages in Sussex too. With lineage like that and the words you've posted above, you've got my vote for King.

it also Chanted Rangers Celtic and Arsenal Tottenham in the north stand and in the south stand it was Mid Sussex with Lancing and Worthing having a go back.

As I'm from East Sussex, I'll probably be biased towards this side of the county.
However what's the best part of the county you have visited / prefer?

Mine would be the Firehills at Fairlight, great views .
Over the border, probably Bosham.

I'm a West Sussex guy but Mum lives at Fairlight

I can see both sides of the argument. Lived for all but a few years of my life in the West, but I now work all over East Sussex, so I'm gradually getting to know my way around it.

East has some lovely places. Cuckmere Haven & the Seven Sisters areas, Hastings Old Town (very small but nice nonetheless), Ashdown Forest (a stunning place to watch the sun set or rise), Rye is very pleasant. I rarely ever visited Eastbourne prior to working there, but I have to concede, the seafront is beautifully maintained & largely preserved by the local council, and a very pleasant place to be. Parts of the old town there, and the Meads area (is that the same thing??) are also lovely. Driving through villages like Burwash, Winchelsea or Ditchling always makes me want to stop & pop into one of the local pubs, though being on duty does preclude that somewhat. Bodiam Castle is a PROPER castle, with a moat & everything, the ruins of Pevensey Castle are also splendid, Battle High Street leading up to the Abbey is majestic, and I do tend to have a soft spot for quirky old (and pretty) Lewes. AND IT HAS THE AMEX.


Less pleasant bits from my observations: St Leonards/ much of Hastings, of course, Newhaven is a distinctly sorry looking place, and Peacehaven always strikes me as some sort of twilight zone when I pass through. I've never found much to recommend Hailsham either. It also takes bloody ages to get anywhere once you get east of Polegate on the A27.

Away from the coast, in central Sussex, I'm often amazed at how far East one can seemingly go, and still be in West Sussex. I regularly go to East Grinstead, for example, which I believe is West Sussex despite being somewhat further East than Brighton.

If you live pretty central in Sussex then there's no real "best" to live in, as each is accessible.

North or coastal Sussex might be a more interesting debate.

Having lived most of my life in coastal Sussex but also short times in the Weald, I have to say it's a draw in my opinion. They are both so lovely and both so different.

Whilst I really liked your post, I think this very unfair to say "MUCH of Hastings, of course," as if somehow this is a given. There are parts of the town that leave much to be desired, as would be the case with any town, and probably rather more than most, I accept, but that is NOT to say that much of the town is awful.

Agreed. I think we have to accept that the whole of the county (or counties) is not some sort of picture postcard and that therefore there's bound to be some bits in both East and West that some folk don't much care for - so the likes of Hastings, Crawley and Bognor get a bit of a hard time. All I can say is that when I commuted to Stoke-on-Trent during the week and only returned home on a Friday evening, the sight of the Shoreham power station (hardly a thing of beauty!) used to cheer me up considerably.

There are parts of the town that leave much to be desired, as would be the case with any town, and probably rather more than most, I accept, but that is NOT to say that much of the town is awful.

I believe this was done in 1974 to balance the populations out, but since you've gained Crawley and we've lost Brighton & Hove, we'll take East Grinstead back, thank you very much.
