I was in the square and after we’d just been attacked by Russians with gum shields, hammers etc the last thing you want is a journo pointing a camera in your face taking a photo and therefore a lot of people on here angry that we’d just been attacked whilst we were sitting down enjoying our lunch would chuck a beer over them and tell them to do one. Don’t forget the Press had twisted the story the previous 2 nights and how it was English fans causing all the trouble. The fact that it was undercover old bill makes it even worse, they knew the Russians were about to attack us and did nothing about it just took photos for evidence to justify their trip. I surprised PC Darren Balkham who buddy’s up with all of the 5 boys on away games was not pushing to press charges on the terrible French policing of that weekend, where many England fans could easily have been killed rather than give very damming character references to each and every one of the Brighton 5. I feel disappointed with The Albion for not fully investigating what happen on that dreadful weekend down in Marseille involving our own loyal supporters and no one from the French police has come in for any accountability at all.

Good informed post.

I hope if nothing else is learned from all this, that people know that Darren Balkham is not your mate no matter how pally he gets and how much he preaches he is looking out for you. Slip up one day and he will be more than happy to see that you are banned and allow your name to be dragged through the gutter by the local media.

One of them has never spoken to him in his life.

What I don't QUITE get is this.

I GET that England fans were being attacked by Russians and the whole state of affairs was horrible. There are horror stories of people sitting there and being attacked for no reason, and I accept that.

But some people seem to be using that as some sort of proof or rationalisation that NO ENGLAND FANS could POSSIBLY have been being violent in France. :lolol:

They aren't mutually exclusive.

No they don't... everyone with half a brain knows that England fans are anti social idiots when they gather in large numbers in the sun giving it large to all and sundry....

I know two people who were in the square at the start of it all.. they said categorically that there had been no problems until local French youths started throwing stuff around in hit and run attacks on random bars... this was followed 24 hours later by the organised Russian attacks.....

I wonder if any undercover Russian police were there with their cameras ? After all, before the tournament started, didn't the Russian hooligans tell the English press they intended to batter everything that was English?

So, at the risk of being naive, why drink in a public place with shirts & flags in full view? Why not save that for the game itself.

What has that got to do with my post ? The Russian hooligans would of found English fans wherever they were !! They told the English press months before the tournament started !!

I was asking a question. If I could afford to go abroad for an England game, I'd avoid the obvious public places advertising 'English fans' here.
Or, is the attitude, we're here to enjoy ourselves & nobody is going to stop us? An act of bravado?

Genuine question.

It wasn't a Brighton away game with just a few thousand away fans, we are talking about tens of thousands English fans, how can that many go for a quiet drink and hope they don't get attacked?

I'm going by photos & footage showing flags draped at cafes, & obviously wearing England shirts.

The Russians went there with intent to harm English supporters, they bragged about it to the media. My point is, where were the Russian police spotters ?

And why aren't those Russians who bragged about causing carnage brought up on attempted murder charges ? They said what they were going to do, they turned up with hammers and iron bars, put fans in comas. Isn't that premeditated? And 5 of our own get banned from the club they love for defending themselves against these animals?

Do they have such a thing? I thought it was an English idea to try to stop trouble. The Russians won't be bothered about their fans. They know they've got the World Cup & it won't be removed.

That is why many went to the square, as the port appeared to be attracting the trouble... I've got photos from that afternoon in the square. Everyone having a laugh, loads of shirters , face paint etc...

The Russians with intent were state sponsored. It is similar to the Russian approach in the likes of the Ukraine and Georgia. Military action from non-military combatants.

Yep. "Little green men".

They will be the ones in police uniform at World Cup 2018, cracking more English heads as well.

Just like Russian soldiers identified as fighting in east Ukraine were simply "on holiday".
