The real problem is that fifteen points will have been played for by the time the transfer window closes and may well have an effect where we finish the season, albeit with a stronger team for the remaining 41 games.

Exactly the season starts on Aug 9th and the season can be nicely shaped in the first few games before the window shuts

But who is to say the 5 games we play in that period will have better team/squad/transfer dealings than us? We may STILL be the better team against some of the other teams in this 5 game period. Not all teams will have a better transfer window than us even!

You make some interesting points here and in your previous post.

TB has said for the previous two seasons that the target is a playoff spot. As far as I'm aware, all he's said so far about 14/15 is that he expects us to be "competitive". "Competitive" is ambiguous, of course, but I anticipate he'll be asked for a bit more clarity at the upcoming fans' forum. I expect he'll say the same as the last two seasons - top two will be great, but realistically top six..

This is all he's said so far
I’m extremely confident we will bring in the right players…We could bring in a few players tomorrow but we want the best players we can with the budget we’ve got. I’m confident at the start of the season we’ll have a very competitive squad.

Weds, Brum, Leeds, Bolton, Charlton....at least 2 of them have been pretty active I believe, and 2 more might be better than us so that's a pretty risky strategy I reckon

Notters has pointed me to this, which I'd missed... http://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/1127...arget_top_six/

in which he's quoted as saying (my emphasis):

“Similar to the last three seasons we have had in the Championship we believe we will have a competitive and good squad.

“Our aim is to reach the Premier League. To do that you need to finish in the top six. You can have good luck or bad luck with injuries and certain situations.

“We will not put any pressure to say if it is not top six it is no good. I am confident Sami will get the best out of the players and if all goes well we will have a realistic chance of finishing the top six and a realistic chance of getting promoted every season we are in the Championship. That is our goal.

Whilst you're not wrong. It may be possible to sign slightly better players during that period and do better over the rest of the season than signing slightly worse players before the season starts. It's all so hypothetical that I'd just like to see how it all pans out.

It's also worth noting that we had APPALLING luck with injuries last season. If this doesn't repeat itself, this, combined with the vastly improved trading facilities, mean we would still be in with a reasonable shout of making the playoffs without making any more signings (IMHO like)... But equally I'm confident that we will make several more quality signings. There are so many reasons to be confident, and so few to be worried.

Don't forget the Time To Gel. Can't just throw players in and expect them to play as a cohesive unit straight away. Will be a good few games after the end of the transfer window before they start to play as a team rather than a set of individuals.

What ever TB might say, the fact is that at the moment we haven't got a competitive squad, we have an ok first eleven and that's it. We have lost 10 or 11 from the squad since last Jan and brought 4 in. Every one knows we need to add to the squad, we can put out a competitive 11 but as showed against Real Betis when we made changes we got taken apart. Signing Dunk for 4 years doesn't make me feel any better.

If Ankergren is our first choice keeper and CMS our first choice striker that is a League 1 at best First XI

Yeah but is it a Championship winning League one First XI?
