I'm very taken with the East India Youth album so far, it covers so many bases, yet is still to my ears coherant and accessible. I think he's got a massively good shot at the Mercury (even at this early stage.)
I was especially interested in what he had to say about modern pop music in the Quietus interview today
Thinking again about how pop music is at the moment, we do get annoyed when people say The Quietus is anti pop music, we're not, we're against the formulaic. Pop is about hitting you emotionally in a strange way.
WD: Pop music should be the most emotional music ever. But I've been thinking about this, and I think the reason for how pop is now is because the pop star is now so self-obsessed that all the emotion behind it is gone. I was thinking of pop icons we had before, like David Bowie or Madonna. These are people who are so interested in the world around them, and it's not just about the absorbing of those influences, it's about the need to ****ing communicate to other people. Has Rihanna ever read a ****ing book, ever? What does Rihanna listen to? She might listen to loads, but she doesn't communicate it does she? Lady Gaga goes on about Jeff Koons and Pop Art, but I think it's a PR schtick, because there's a hole where nobody's talking about that, but it's not inherent in her music, is it? Her production style and the songwriting don't communicate her apparent love for this other world outside of herself. That's why pop music has lost its emotional content, because it's stopped being about an emotional experience with influences, and it's become someone's experience with themselves, and I think that's ****ing boring. I can't understand why anyone wants to listen to that, or make that. You can draw a line somewhere in the 90s and see how it all went downhill.

I saw Embrace at Stanmer Park once. For about ten minutes. Had to get a snack. Came back, and they'd finished. However, Teenage Fanclub were just starting in another tent - result!

Whilst it's debatable one can ever spend too much money on records I feel I may have in 2014 so I'm going to have to reign it in this year. This current Tasmania touring holiday is costing us shitloads! That said, I'm already lusting after the new Springsteen/Tom Morello, Mogwai and A Silver Mt Zion albums and will do well to behave myself when we get home!

Anyway, I know I've mentioned how much I love Art is Hard records on here before; wonderful little UK DIY label which has brought us stuff by Joanna Gruesome, Playlounge, Keel Her, Gum, Gorgeous Bully, The Black Tambourines and so on...

Great find - certainly familiar with the label from a number of superb records last year (Best Friends' "Happy Anniversary" being one of them), and I've just signed up for the free fortnightly track.

Two cream/white LP's, two CD's (including a live album), a gloss photograph and individual lyric sheets, all neatly packaged in nicely decorated acetate paper. Beautiful. Album's not bad either.

Have had a listen to some of the tracks on this and I know what you mean. An albums worth is probably enough in one sitting- lyrics made me laugh- especially Fizzy and McFlurry. I think they may scare me live.

They supported Sigur Ros last year and sounded pretty good. I couldn't get into to it as at the headliners insistence they played behind a semi translucent cloth meaning that you couldn't really see them.
Further insult to injury was added when the headliners used the cloth for some poncy light effects and then discarded it after 3 songs. Thanks a bunch lads.

Definitely humourous and quite catchy as well. I like it. It's their 5th or 6th record, they've been around some time I understand.
