Agreed. Would go as far as saying such a move may stunt the development of the likes of J Smith and Barnes. Was pleased to see the 2 Argies were playing but Hart and Holroyd up front?
Barnes ran himself into the ground at Swindon on his own.Why use him again and risk being down to one strker if he gets injured? We are struggling to find a striker as it is.Again Gus got that spot on.

Actually I'm not sure I do to be honest. Tweaking the team is fine but I wasn't too impressed with 7 changes myself.

But why risk the first team when the cup means nothing, we wont win it, and we need to get a play-off place this season as thats Blooms minimum objective. The likes of Bennett would have been far more likely to get injured last night, lower league opposition at home, obviously up for it on a tuesday night, I can just picture him being brought down by a big lumbering defender. If he doesnt give the Argies a chance, seeing as they're on one year deals there was no point in signing them, because he'd never have seen them in professional football. Obviously we were lightweight up front, but why risk one of our 2 decent strikers on a meaningless game, if Barnes gets injured, we have just Murray left?
The only one which suprised me is why Sparrow started, but then i guess we have no other attacking midfielder to replace him.

The fact that we have had Sparrow sent off (which means missing three games) and Navaro likely to be out for a long time rather shows why Gus decided not to put out a full strength team in a competition we aren't very interested in. Judging by a lot of other results from last night many teams were none to fussed about the competition either.

I'm sure if we had a spare left back Painter would have been dropped as well.Bit of a risk playing him last night.

Wenger and Fergie both throow the kids in.It's exactly what Gus did and probably where he gets it from. Why risk 1st teamers?
Gus in my books got it right. It's just a shame the fringe players didn't grab there chance last night. If they put in a good show and still lost that doesn't matter to much.It goes to show that we really lack depth to this team to trouble the top 2.

I don't really buy this "risking players" lark - injuries can happen any time, on the pitch or on the training ground. At this stage of the season, I'd rather our 1st teamers were getting as much time on the pitch together as possible to get their sharpness and match fitness back, and get the familiarity of playing with each other. By all means perhaps make 2 or 3 changes tops, and then a few subs later on to give some of the fringers a run-out. But I think that basically chucking a team of ressies out in the 2nd game of the season was, and will prove to be, counter-productive.

Gus is far more qualified than the likes of me to make those decisions obviously. But thats just my opinion.

I was disappointed he made SEVEN changes though - was that really necessary ?

OK I'm not overly bothered about this Cup either, but I'd have thought the team needs time on the pitch to (ok, I'm not going to use the g-word), but you know, get used to playing with each other and hopefully take a bit of momentum into the Rochdale game.

Now its back to square one, with another 7 or 8 changes again for Saturday. I don't think thats ideal personally, but he knows what he's doing I suppose.

It's not back to square one. 8 of the starting 11 would not have started on Saturday anyway (Only Elphick, Painter, Sparrow would have started).

He treated it as a reserve game and it will not affect the team because they didn't consider it a first team game.

Instead, they're getting a full weeks training in preperation for the important game against Rochdale.

It is a bit shit for those who travelled but I fully expected the changes to be honest.

This attitude is a massive positive. We are very serious about the league. Nothing else matters. Just a gutter to lose Sparrow and Navarro.

Yes - we lost but if you look at a lot of the results last night those teams who expect to be in the promotion/play off frame lost last night. OK we showed no desire but that is down to the fringe players who should be hoping to get into the team. Maybe it told Poyet more about them then we give it credit. The League Cup has always been much malligned and we are just doing what the bigger clubs do.

Yes, lets have a look at some of the favourites. Southampton, Huddersfield, Sheffield Wednesday , Peterborough. How did they get on?
Oh.
Good point, well made STEVE.

SEVEN changes pissed me off a bit I'm afriad.

I'm glad we are out though. We can do without a cup run with our small squad.I wonder how Gus will treat the FA cup and JPT???

What a load of SHIT. Poyet got this all wrong last night. It shows

1. A lack of respect for an old and established cup competition

2. Extreme arrogance in that we think we are " above " the likes of this competition - how many times do we slag of Manure and Arse for not taking the FA Cup seriously ? - double standards and hypocracy

3. A big 2 fingers to the fans who travelled up there

The best formula is a winning team so all this toss about not caring we lost is TOSS. Winning is infectous and Poyet f***ed up badly and as the only 2 decent players we had on the pitch had to take up the slack we have lost them both and I blame Poyet for that.

I am a big Poyet fan generally but last night he f***ed up pure and simple.

Well perhaps Gus should have let people know beforehand that he'd be putting a reserve team out, before they bothered spending the time and money travelling all the way up to Northampton on a Tuesday night to watch the ressies bow out.

I'd have expected maybe two or three changes, but seven was a bit of a pisstake tbh. I felt exactly the same when McCarthy did it with Wolves at Old Trafford last season. You can say that the end justifies the means (which is also debatable in this case in my opinion), but at least just let people make an informed decision about whether its actually worth going or not.

But if these injuries happened on Saturday then thats ok suddenly? As Easy said : injuries happen, thats football. I'm not saying we should have played our first choice line up (as I said earlier, I was pleased for the Argies to be playing), but I don't think Gus should have tinkered quite as much as he did. He even said before the game that he wanted to create a winning mentality. Unfortunately, the chances of this happening are made somewhat more remote when you play Hart and Holroyd up front. This isn't an issue with the manager, he is still inexperienced and will probably realise he got it wrong last night. I still think he can get us out of this league and I look forward to seeing the boys on Saturday and then at Sheffield as well :albion2:

Team was much as I expected before I left home although I felt that Barnes should have played to give us some form of threat going forward (and he had said that he wanted to play and to get on the scoring trail) and I think Gus seriously misjudged Poke's mental preparedness following the signing of Ankergren. The signs were there in the warm up when he looked very jittery and our goalkeeping coach should have picked it up and pushed Walker in.

I was well pleased to see Batti and Baz play and thought that the signs were good that we have at least one winner there (and maybe two if Baz gets some studs for his boots and learns that wingers have to defend too).

Whing, Hart and Holroyd all needed game time but didn't take the chance. You don't know unless you see them. Dicker on the other hand looked ready to slot in which was a plus.

Bad night perhaps and putting out the reserves was disrespectful if justifiable. It got what it probably deserved but glad I went tbh.

Out of the country on Saturday but hoping to be back for Hillsborough

How many Brighton would you say made the trip?

The away end holds about 800 and seemed to be way over half full - probably 500+?

Earlier i had popped into the club shop before a meeting to enquire about arrangements. The manager said Albion had sold only 100 tix and indicated another 100 may travel. I warned him that only 200 sounded most unlikely and offered a bet on 400+!

Yeah it was certainly unfair on the fans.

Some people seem to be missing the point that we should have beaten Northampton with that team last night. That is what bothers me, rather than the 7 changes.

If you look at the starting line-up, our entire back four would walk into any team in Northampton's division and Dicker and Sparrow are both way above League Two level. Holroyd is out of touch, but was banging the goals not long ago against defences only 1 division worse than Northampton's. The team Gus put out was easily good enough to win the game. The players let him down.

Without Poke's howler I suspect we would have won comfortably. Well in control without threatening until that point.

Sorry algie my friend but l cant agree.

Why Gus?, WHY WHY WHY? after only ONE match did u change seven, yes SEVEN of the team that played in our magnificent win at Swindon on Saturday?. This, to me, is the first major mistake l have seen Gus make.

Yes ok l know it was only the Carling Cup, know we were never going to win the competiition, but at this stage of the season particularly it is so important for eleven players on the pitch to gell together.

All of a sudden l have worries for Saturday now, Rochdale will be on a high from their win at Barnsley last night, and we wiil be forced into seeing another seven changes in personnel, even more after the sending off and injury last night.

Rant over.

ps ... can you tell l dont like the rotation system? lol

Gus f***ed up by not telling the fans he was putting out a weak squad, yeah, but his major f*** up was by putting out a squad that was too strong. What was the point in playing Sparrow or Navarro? Or bringing on Bennett? If something would have happened to him, we would been well and truly buggered.
Should've stuck the rezzies out and told the fans not to bother.
