Yes, I know what the song is about, and at the time I liked it. This thread is about music you loved 'then', but now don't.

In any case, just think about it:

"I feel like a Paki. I feel like a Chink. I feel like a spik...." I could go on. It would take the logic of The Major in Fawlty Towers to explain why 'wog' is fine but 'paki' isn't.

I felt at the time the group knew exactly what they were doing. Despite all the intellectual mansplaining in the NME and Sounds. No lessons learned from how Alf Garnet became a pin up boy of middle aged racists, despite him being created to mock them. Back then this didn't spoil my enjoyment of the music. Now.....it does. That's all.

Incidentally I loved 'The cops are coming' by the Heavy Metal Kids, and 'Stranglehold' by the UK Subs. Have a listen to the lyrics and see how well they have stood the test of time........ o_O

As for my friends, being black and hearing a band sing 'feel like a wog'......people having sly looks to see how they were reacting.....they felt uncomfortable. No more than that, just uncomfortable. Not because of the revelation of an uncomfortable truth, but because of how the word was normally used back then. "Wog's out" (sic). Etc..
Calm down!

My poor memory tells me that you don't like The Beatles.
My aesthetic judgment is that The Beatles are one of the best recorded bands in history, whereas The Stone Roses ...
Your memory is good, its your aesthetic judgement that's poor. ;)

Typical of this site. Windy gammon calling someone who no longer likes the lyrics of some tracks on a record made 45 years ago, 'woke'.

A mate of mine used to drink mild and bitter with Bernard Manning when he lived in Barnsley, and he never took himself seriously.

I saw the Stranglers 3 times in the 70s, and a revamped version at the Canterbury Festival in the noughties and absolutely loved it.

Incidentally did you see Cornwall play in Brighton around 10 years ago in a little venue near the pier? He was good but when he did 'Feel like a wog' it sounded quite incongruous. Times change. Innit. And it is what it is. No need to get exercised about it
That would be Cornwell , Cornwall is down my way .

As a nerdy teenager I thought Prog was the business, and thought Minstrel in the Gallery was fantastic. Really leaves me cold now. Conversely, the more I listen to Yes nowadays the more I think that Steve Howe is an underrated genius.
I’m afraid I couldn’t disagree more… Minstrel destroys anything by Yes who are almost as unlistenable (‘trooper aside) as Gabriel era Genesis and King Crimson post In the Court… and I’ve tried to ‘get into it…’ I’ve owned several ‘classic’ Yes albums… some more than once, always thinking this time I’ll get it… and yet… I literally can’t find a reason to keep them in my collection - even with the oft splendid Roger Dean artwork. I love Wakeman’s early 70s solo stuff btw, so I’m not completely anti the Yes family.

However, having said all of that, nothing quite reaches the absolutely horrific lows of ELP…

Give me thermo nuclear rock and roll 🎸 or unheralded prog masterpieces!

I don’t rate every Tull album either … Just wanted to point that out :)

Now the Strawbs, there’s a band who get better with age… Union aside obviously… ahem.

Wow. Different strokes etc.

Well I won't say you are wrong or 'diddums'.

For me Fripp's guitar on The Construkction of Light, and indeed Adrian Belew in general are things of great wonder. And Gabriel era Genesis is the only Genesis to my ear.

But each to his own

(I assume we can agree that Machine head, Black Sabbath vol IV, Trilogy, Aqualung, Sea Shanties, Led Zep 1-4, Live Dates and Irish Tour 74 are all mint, right?)

Can’t stand Led Zeppelin… or more precisely - I can’t abide Robert Plant.

Vol 4 is indeed the best, fully coked up, Sabbath album.

Much prefer Benefit and Stand Up to Aqualung - although I own a quad copy of the latter, which has an interesting mix… not as interesting as the Stormbringer quad … which is awesome.

If you’re referring to High Tide, Sea Shanties… then I’d take the second self titled LP… everyday of the week.

Again, live dates ? Wishbone Ash… ? Hmmmm anything lacking Blackmore live - not my bag… but the ‘Ash, yes I treasure their early output and - There’s the rub!

Fripp… fine if you like your guitar lines played with all the coldness and emotional ‘feeling’ of a guitar playing robot, given life by severel nuclear physicists who decided it best to leave out the charisma and humour chips… oh yes and the key ‘humanity’ bit… a guitar should be an extension of your soul… not something to be calibrated and set to ‘numb’, akin an ice cold compress of technical virtuosity.

Not really rock and roll, more a very clever set of algorithms passed off as ‘art.’

Oh… and I really dislike ALL genesis… absolutely sodding dreadful.

I’d sooner lie back and listen to Camel or give Barclay James Harvest a chance to prove they indeed were better than the Moody Blues… who were, again, well… a bit, you know… 🧐

If I’m getting really deep … I’d be off in the realms of Fruup or perhaps Gravy Train, Gracious… Indian Summer… Titus Groan too… even Gnidrolog… all far better than sooooooo many of the really commercially ‘acceptable’ prog bands… in my opinion lol.

Rory’s obviously a genius… can’t fathom how you can love Fripp after bathing in all the raw emotion of a player like Gallagher ??? Must be like making love to a pile of bricks 🧱

And here’s the kicker… Machine Head is hands down my least favourite MK2/MK3 album…

(But yes, I own a quad copy… better solos)

😂

I know you are a youngish bloke so I salute your extreme musicology

Yes you got the right High Tide. I like both the two early albums on Liberty, (and have them both on vinyl).

This (below) is why I love Fripp. I should have posted this on the 'tracks that bring tears to the eye' thread.

He also played on two of Peter Hammill's Chrysalis albums. Music for the autistic. <sigh>

His first band was called Lex Quigly and the Quiglitrons. And he's married to Toyah. What's not to like?

:lolol: x

I might … might give them a listen… 😂

Thank you btw… I was lucky as a student, ostensibly studying Environmental Sciences I actually took it upon myself to study music of the late 60s to late 70s … having a shop like Windows in Newcastle with a 5 for £30 on back cat CDs … well my student loan went quite far… 🧐

I guess when I told my friends Nektar were better than Floyd … I was a lost cause 😂

Radiohead just got better with every album IMO
peaking at In Rainbows, although Moon Shaped Pool is a mighty fine album
I remember the day when Kid A came out, and I played it in my car on the way to seeing them in concert that evening. Thought it was utter shite on a first play…but I was spectacularly wrong.
