This exactly.... the reason footy in this country was so attractive to overseas footy fans and TV companies... was directly because of the fast and furious nature of the game, plus the tribal atmosphere in the stadiums... simple. Sadly both those attributes have been irreversibly diluted by seats and overseas playing tactics..... hence it is fairly certain that the Sky/Bt billions will in 10 years or so, be scaled back.

I respectfully disagree with the right honourable gentlemen. I've been in many a splendid rugby atmosphere, pint in hand and no nastiness or trouble.

And practically every game of football I've been to has had no trouble and very few have even been nasty in any way but it doesn't stop the fact that football matches are different because of the segregation and they are better for it too.

The fact that you can't stand with a pint in your hand at football is nothing to do with segregated football crowds and everything to do with legislation brought about by police who treat all football fans as potential thugs and politicians who knew sod all about football and were driven by their own prejudices (and in no small way because they wanted football to be more like rugby).

Brazenly walked through the turnstile, into the loo then onto his seat, Black and Gold WW scarf adorned round his neck.

Not sure this would happen at Millwall, Chelsea, Stoke, West Ham or any other club for that matter.

I have been in many a home end but kept a low profile and never so brazen, OK so he was about 65 but still, should it be allowed?

Are you sure it was not one of those tasteful half and half scarves? Surely they were produced for a match as huge as this?

As far as the the atmosphere thing goes it seems we are still living in the 70/80's! Its rubbish now at most grounds its just all tv hype tbh Walk on up at anfield has about 10 scarves up and some goons with club flags around the pitch:moo: SPOT THE DIFFERENCE!

What has a football match in England got in comparison with an American ball park ?
It sounds like you are still in holiday mode and it is becoming boring.

Exactly this. Who gives a monkeys what they do in America, we live in England - although I accept that it's fast becoming hard to tell the difference, unfortunately.

If a sport needs quoting to make a case for fan integration then why not just use our own game of rugby.

Personally, anyone wearing the colours of the opposition in the wrong end shouldn't be allowed entry. Same as I have no problem with away days in seeing numerous 'home fans only' pubs. Plenty of neutral pubs around if you want to chat with fans of other clubs, and there's the same opportunity to chat on the way to and from the game as well.

I'm a lefty liberal in general, but I don't ever want to give up the healthy tribalism that exists in football. We need a space for that in an increasingly thought police driven world.

Absolutely no harm in it whatsoever, as long as he wasn't behaving like a div.

They don't have segregation in American ballparks. I sat amongst the NY Mets fans in my Twins shirt, and I didn't even get shot at once. No wonder we're not even allowed BEER in our seats when some fans over here get all UPPITY just because a supporter of the opposition is (shock-horror) sitting amongst us. Whats the problem ? Isn't it simply a case of behaving like an ADULT ?

Its actually a good opportunity to have a chat with an opposition fan to learn a bit about his team and some of his players.

You could of course have stayed closer to home and talked about another PROPER game rather than bloody Basketball and mentioned Twickenham and Rugby. I am thinking from your posts since you came back from holiday that you should be thinking of moving to the US of A. I think you are in love

I've never been to a basketball game, and never will. Its an ABYSMAL sport, quite possibly the worst one ever invented. And I don't own any tweed jackets or drink Pimms, so of course I've never been to Twickenham either. You're quite right on your third point though, I would quite happily move to America, if they'd have me.

:lolol:, I of course meant Baseball and i have not seen anyone in tweed or drinking Pimms at rugby in the last 25 years. I have seen plenty of casually dressed young and old people drinking beer pitchside and fans of both clubs playing mixing throughout the stadium, whilst having an excellent time though.

I went to see Saracens play Wasps the other week.
The supporters mixed with each other, there was a great atmosphere and we were allowed to drink in our seats whilst watching the match
After the match everyone walked back to the car park chatting to each other - no nastiness
Totally different atmosphere to football

Yes. Totally different. Dull. Having been to about half a dozen pro rugby games - from international (England v Scotland) - to club level, I wouldn't swap atmospheres. I have no wish to see fans fighting or abusing each other but neither do I mind the fact that football is partisan. At the rugby games I've been to - even the England international - many fans were more interested in the drinking than the match, even repeatedly heading to the bar while play was in progress. Quite happy to socialise with away fans before and after and have a laugh but I don't want to be sitting next to one.

Didn't an Arsenal fan get a slap in WSL for the same thing?
