Both Southampton and Portsmouth do have developments like this though. They're just not that out of town.

Southampton has that leisure park where the cinemas are, Ocean Village, and Portsmouth has Gunwharf Quays.

A lot easier to build in those places because of all the brownbelt land. These cities are port cities so have a lot of industrial sites, many of which are more valuable now as leisure, shopping and housing developments. By contrast Brighton is a seaside town for tourists, so we don't have anywhere near as much big industrial space that we can now build over

Agreed. They are absolutely NOT 'out-of-town' shopping developments. In Southampton's case, the shopping development is West Quay, which could not be more town centre. The two other sites (both ex docks /industrial) are Ocean Village, and the one you probably meant (with the Odeon Cinema) Leisure World, are both just food / cinema / casino - not shopping. Gun Wharf is a discount outlet / food / cinema / housing development (and a pretty good one). What TCB is referring to is a Bluewater / Lakeside / Meadowhall kind of set up.

Fair enough. I was talking about out of town leisure park facilities however, a bit like Crawley has with the cinema, bowling and health club etc.

Actually what Brighton needs is modern conference facilities. The club has seen how much business they can drum up at the Amex, plus the antiquated state of the Brighton Centre. If there was a next big plan, this would be my guess.

The council has been looking for yonks to re-invigorate arguably the worst-looking building in the city, much to the chagrin of the employees.

It's going to be bloody expensive though.

I second the calls for all off the following:

A water park
A casino(actually I want several)
A whorehouse
A cinema/bowlplex/lazerquest
A giant ice rink
An olympic sized swimming pool
An F1 track

Obviously the above would need to be supported by sufficient eateries and, er, drinkeries. And maybe another hotel to cope with all the people using the site.

As an alternative to a zoo I'd like to suggest a safari park.

Further to the above suggestions I'd like to see some kind of go-kart/dirt buggies/bikes facilities-perhaps as part of the F1 complex.

Of course, I'd also expect to see an AIRPORT, preferably of the international kind located on or near the premises.

To help alleviate the transport issues that may or may not arise from all of the above I'd hope to see the mooted monorail system installed. Or perhaps an underground train system connecting the whole city and the outlying areas.

All of which I expect Tony Bloom to fund, whilst also shelling out on numerous multi-million pound players for the Albion.

I'd also like to see Falmer station redeveloped into something resembling St Pancras with a stunning Victotian glass roof, 15 platforms and Class 395 High Speed Javelin trains going in both directions.

This would alleviate the queues after the match plus house a lot of out of town shopping and eateries.

Other towns, mostly inland, have areas of industrial land around their edges, ripe for development. Brighton, being as it is sandwiched bewteen the sea and the downs, has no such sites. And its hardly unique to Brighton. Looking in this direction from Brighton, neither Portsmouth, nor Southampton have out of town developments of that kind either.

Edit. I see my point has already been made.

Silly boy. Ask Hiney. The retail park there is pretty big.

That's in Hedge End. Sainos, M&S, PC Currys World, Three other DIY outlets including giant B&Q, Halfords, Carpets, Sofa's Furniture. KFC. Maccy D's, Pizzathingy, Burger king, Tyres, Garages, Car sales and loads of other useful shops.
If it's not here, it's close or 10 minutes up or down the motorway. Botley Three pubs and a small Coop and the station is in Curdridge.
