The exact same thing was said in the pub last night. In the second half Milner was in acres of space and had a great chance if Rooney had put him in. Instead Rooney TURNED ROUND and looked for Gerrard and then lost the ball.

The was one in the first half where he shot instead of playing Milner in for a cross or a shot from a better angle

Rooney really has to start as he is far and away our best striker, even when he puts in such mediocre performances as he has so far in this tournament. Bizarrely though, I don't think there is much pressure on him in terms of being subbed, due to the fact that we don't have a second striker who is really anywhere near as good. So in other words, taking him off either results in someone not as good coming on or changing the shape of the team to accomodate someone in another position. Right to bring him off yesterday, but it didn't exactly improve us did it? It is a very difficult one to call I would say. Whilst players should be played on form and should be dropped if not playing well etc, I would argue that Rooney is quite a lot better than the other options we have, which makes it a hugely difficult decision to sub him.
