Nicky Rust WASNT bad..... he was a bloody good keeper for LEAGUE 2. His problem was his confidence and lets be honest it wasnt the best time for a keeper to be at the Albion. It's real pity because he had bags of talent but I think playing for the Albion at that time was like going over the top at Ypres and he was shellshocked... too young to deal with it and he never recovered.

As understudy to Beeney he would have matured really well.

Basically, the moment Dean Wilkins took over, Wayne had a big flounce demanding to be 1st choice keeper.

Although he did accept that he would have to fight for his place, it continued to bubble under, and despite some ropey performances along the way he was aghast whenever he was dropped. I think there was even one time when he was dropped after spilling crosses, and pushing them onto onrushing forwards rather than to safety, when he turned round and said something like "I can't have been dropped for footballing reasons ...".

In short, a decent keeper who thought he was much better than he was. It was the arrogance and attitude of being better than us, that got up peoples noses.
Mmm I don't think thats far.

What I was told driectly by someone who was involved, Dick Knight didn't want him and it was Dean Wilkins who pushed the deal through(this was in the days when we had a chairman who fancied himself as manager).

One of the first days he was at training after signing permentaly, Dick Knight told him he wasn't his signing, and he didn't want him here. Wayne certainly wasn't arrogant, probably had confidence level less than zero though.

Also a lot of the crowd rejected him, as he was a real threat to their beloved Kuipers. I'm just glad that won't be an issue any more.

all very interesting but wasn't it MM who signed him? Initially on loan from Villa and then permanently in the January. he then played half of the next season initially putting in a transfer request when wilkins took over and then leaving in the transfer window that followed.

Sorry but I think your person who was involved has either a dodgy memory or has made it up.

his main wekaness was when blocking shots, rather than parrying around the post or over the bar, he had a habit of blocking the ball and putting it right back into a danger area, and often for a tap in.

A bit like here vs Watford, that far up the pitch he should have been looking for either a team mate or at the very least putting the ball out of play but he chose to do this instead.

He could have become a better keeper with experience, but he was no where near the finished article he thought he was and therefore he did get upset when he wasn't first choice and this made it hard for the manager to keep him and the fans to warm to him.

Quite. As I recall, Henderson had been away on international duty, Kuipers stepped in and we won that game. Henderson came back an Wilkins left Kuipers in goal saying if you have the shirt it's yours to lose.

I did actually sympathise with Henderson in that situation, because it's somewhat unfair to punish him on a club level because he was called to his international squad. However, at the time, I think one of the criticisms McGhee faced was his persistence with Henderson, and I felt there was also an element of Wilkins trying t show right off the bat that he wasn't McGhee.

If he really was that good his star would have risen much more than it has.

Didnt he end up @ Grimsby ??

He suffered a bad back injury. He went on loan to Grimsby as part of his getting back to full fitness. He's still at Preston.

Nah, my dodgey memory if thats true. The point was Dick Knights comment to him, not the man who signed him. Wilkins must have been the coach then?

He had some blinders for us - Leeds away sticks out, but he was quality at Palace that night too.

However as mentioned, I would have thought that 4/5 goals that season came from rebounds of his parries, which frustrated many of the Pro Kuipers lot. Throw in the mistake at Bournemouth where he slipped in the pissing rain (disgraceful treatment from Albion fans) and the Watford freak goal above and people (again, the pro Kuipers mob in the main) felt the need to make him a hate figure.

Shame really - his distribution was absolutely class, and his all round goalkeeping was fine apart from the parrying thing. An alright keeper - not a great one, not a shit one. But he was definitely better before the transfer became permanent.

Not having read the rest of the thread I'd guess it's because he's just a shit keeper. Please see below for a Bournemouth re-crearion.

Just a guess like.

Still the only keeper I've seen taking a throw-in in the opposition's half.

(at home v. Chesterfield, 2006?)

But, yes, that doesn't make him very good, which he wasn't.
