If the Watford owners assume relegation and want to plan for the manager who may get them back up, Hughton is a good choice.
Seeing how trigger happy they are though, I doubt they're accepting relegation, nor will a manager get lots of time.
As ugly and unglamorous as it is, looking at proven records in these situations and with the Jan window just ahead I would've thought first Alladyce and second Pulis would be better options to ensure survival this season.
They've done it numerous times.
But... but... what about the fact they didn't rule out Southampton's equalising goal for handball! How can we blame the refereeing mistake/var mistake for costing someone their job if they'd already made the decision last week?! No, no no. This won't do. (Disclaimer: I haven't seen anyone on here blame the mistake in yesterday's game, but Kammy briefly brought it up on goals on sunday).
Interesting... am surprised Chris turned the Cardiff role down, think that would have been a good project for him.
As it stands I think he would definitely keep Watford up, however it’s not a long term project (he’ll be sacked in a year regardless) so not sure he should accept.
The fact that Sanchez Flores himself almost dismissed it. In hindsight makes you think he had possibly been told that is that game had been lost then his job was on the line.

On a purely selfish BHA move I hope that CH doesnt get the job as they have 1 relegation place booked at the moment but this will surely change if he is appointed manager. I would sooner he went to a club like West Ham who are only a very remote possibility of being relegated.

The slide at Watford occurred late last season - they lost 6 of their last 9 - beating only Fulham and Huddersfield and drawing with Southampton - they got thumped at home by West Ham in their last game. Now they may have been distracted by the FA cup (a little like Brighton) - but their hammering in the final was an embarrassment.
They spent practically nothing in the off-season and unloaded a pile of players - something like 30 between loans, releases and a small number of transfers - spent little last season either (and about 30 were loaned or released then as well) - and sold their best player to Everton. In fact you have to go back to 2016 before they spent any kind of money - and even then it was less than £50million. The strategy of the owners seems to be to bring a slew of kids - send them out on loan - hope a few hit - sell them on for big money and pocket the profit. It looks like the club is a vehicle for this - rather than the main focus of their ownership. There have been a lot of transfers and loans between the different clubs they (have) own/ed - with questionable fees.
The squad has got old and tired and Deeney is now 31/32 and not the player he once was.
If Hughton became manager he could well keep them up - but without a massive infusion of new blood and a lot of money being spent (£150+million) they would be relegation candidates next season as well. Anyone who takes the job will have a big, big task on their hands.

Surely we are not concerned with the long term prospect of Watford or even next season we are concerned with what may happen this season, when relegation seems likely.
