wasps nest

Later in the week I've got to prune a Hawthorne hedge and bang next to it is a wasps nest in the ground... if I put a object over the hole for say 30 mins will this harm them?

Don't work anywhere near it at the mo if I were you. They're pretty aggressive at this time of year. I'd get someone specialized to move it/make it safe first, or you may have a rather painful afternoon!

i tend to try and avoid any scenario where there is even the slightest possibility that i might anger a wasp

For Gods' sake don't f*ck about anywhere near a wasps nest. If they swarm and go for you you could well be a gonner. Deal with it or get it dealt with first. Scats sell a brilliant product that you spray in from an aerosol from a distance in the evening when they are all hopefully in the nest. That will sort 'em out. Sorry but can't remember the name.

Unfortunately the job needs doing this week.. I thought brick over the hole with a long rope attached for pulling it off after.. large can of wasp spray for those not inside and a paramedic on standby if that fails

can you contact the council and get them to do something with it...i certainly wouldnt block over their entrance as you may get zapped by the *******s


they know where you live and have a wide network of informant flies and spiders.

Honestly mate, DO NOT mess with a wasps nest.

After my run in with bees a few years ago, please don't do it. Get them moved first.

The Council don't remove/destroy wasps nests (or at least they didn't a few years ago when we had one in the our garden) but they can offer advice on trustworthy private contractors. Based on what I saw I 100% DO NOT recommend the DIY approach, you will come off worst.

If it's in the ground, then buy one of those wasp nest destroyer sprays and spray it in the late evening when they're all home in bed! Wear long trousers, long sleeves, gloves and a jacket with hood pulled well down over your face and should be no problem. I dealt with one a week ago very effectively. No stings. And they're all dead!!

Then surely it's the local authorities responsibility to make it safe before you do any work on it? Seriously mate, a friend of mine is a fearless brick-shithouse sized roofer, and they discover nests in roofs all the time at this time of year. They down tools immediately and wait for specialists to remove them because it's just TOO dangerous to carry on.

I had to deal with a wasp nest earlier this summer. I bought some powdery anti-wasp spray stuff from B&Q, waited 'til evening and then unleashed the stuff on the little buggers. They didn't have a chance.

No sign of them since.
