Most seasons 76 points would be enough for the play offs. It will probably be more this year as the top 7 are far ahead of the rest of the division. Southampton can get a maximum of 86 points. Can they drop less than 10 points for the rest of the season? Seems unlikely. A record of won 9 drawn 5 over the last 14 games would probably still see them miss out.

On a side issue this year I suspect that the total to stay up will be less then 50 points too as it is so close at the bottom.

Have a look at there run in.

I think you need to look at the table again. Add the 15 pts and they would be clearly in the play-offs. As it stands, they need to win 5 games more than the 4 teams above them with only 14 games to go. That is a big ask. They could do it but I doubt it. If they don't, that shows the punishment was right.

Add what '15pts'? They were only deducted TEN.

Even if you add on the ten points, they would still only be about 8th or 9th. With the squad they have, in league 1, that is frankly PATHETIC.

I have, still think dropping less than ten points is unlikely. If Huddersfield continue getting points at the rate they have been, they will end up with 78 points. In which case Southampton can only drop 8 more for the rest of the season, a run in of 10 wins 4 draws. At the end of the season playing lower clubs fighting for their lives in not necessarily easier. They are also playing two games a week for most of the rest of the season due to games in hand and the JPT final.

And they have to play us, thats three points dropped right there!

They are also trying to over take two clubs, as Milwall are equal with Huddersfield. It will never happen.

Train nearly spoilt the Show!

Lots of opposition: Leeds or Swindon, Sheffield Wednesday, eerr ..... Rochdale?

I would be pleased if we get to the last match of the season requiring a 1-1 draw at home against Rochdale for automatic promotion.

I remember DK saying at a forum the difference between League One and The Championship in terms of TV revenue was in the order of £6million.

That was probably prior to ITV Digital collapsing.

They went bust in 2002, just before the start of the seaon we made it into the Championship.

{quote]the cost of the Football League deal proved one too many a burden for ITV Digital, and it was placed into administration on 27 March 2002, after the League refused to accept a £130m pay cut in its £315m deal with the ITV Sport Channel. Most subscription channels ceased broadcasting on ITV Digital on 1 May 2002. The collapse caused severe financial difficulties for lower-division football clubs who had budgeted for large incomes from the television contract.[/quote]

I'm still hopeful of southampton making the play offs this year and beating leeds in the final. (I like the irony of leeds being beaten by a team who started the season on a points deficit).

But would this be good for football, especially as Southampton are another one of many clubs who have cheated by spending more money than they had only to go into administration to clear these debts rather than suffer the consequences of their actions?

If they had to continue to service their debt like most of the other clubs in the division rather than ditch their debt through administration, would they have been able to buy the quality of player they have now and been as competative?

As I understand it, they haven't cheated. Leeds cheated when the same people bought it back having wiped out the debts. Southampton were bought by a new owner who paid off their debts, and has inivested money.

I think the longer Leeds stay down,. the more they suffer for their cheating ways withoin their own administration. Southampton were a bargain buy for a business man who serviced their debts. That isn't bad for football, really.

So was all of the money they owed repaid or restructured, or was some of their debts written off? ie, only paying X pence in the pound like Leeds did?

The parent club was the one that went bust, dragging the club down with it as the football league concluded that
the finances of the parent company and the club were linked to an extent that they were practically the same company/club,
Did all the money the club owed get transferred to the new owners or left with the bankrupt business and conveniently 'lost' from their balance sheets?

If their new owner didn't take on the whole debt and some was written off or dumped onto the failed company, then to me, thats gaining an unfair advantage and therefore cheating.

All the delusional Saints fans I know think they're going to make it into the play-offs THIS season.

To be fair to them, they've got some class players now and Pardew seems to have finally got them to play a bit.

I find that post highly ironic considering it's in a thread based on delusional Brighton fans talking about auto promotion/playoffs next year.

We'll struggle, as we were always going to this year. We have far too high expectations sometimes...

Tony Bloom and Gus Poyet are going to take this club to the next level, Poyet has finally shown that he has some truly great contacts and Bloom is really looking to back the team all the way to the top.

In January we were in the relegation zone. Didn't see Bloom backing the team all the way then. Living in Australia doesn't show me 'backing all the way either' if he has no idea how we're playing.

Signing Diego Arismendi was purely down to his admiration for Gus Poyet the Uruguayan midfielder. I'll be interested to see who we do attract here in the summer and how we finish at the end of this season.

Can't argue with our current form i.e. the last few games. But before that we hadn't won a home game since October and were really struggling. Please let's keep it real and not get carried away. 5 points clear of the relegation zone with 13 games left to play means anything but safety, especially considering the team we're 5 points clear of have 2 games in hand on us...

Doesnt Tony Bloom have the facility to watch our game either live or soon after? I would think that he most certainly does.

I had to laugh as I passed their stadium last week. They have huge posters up around the place saying. "Marching on to Wembley" It's only the Paint Pot Trophy.

well we wont get a result at withdean youre a f***ing jinx on us, last years result was just a freak of nature, so what with losing to you and possibly to:drool: saints its going to be a close run thing.

the talk of Southampton doing so well after the points deduction reminded me of Swindon being denied promotion to the top flight some years back ( under lou macari?) - what was the reason got that? Was it any more sinister than pompey's activities? Can't quite believe that Swindon didn't get it turned round.

What was it all about?

We were demoted 2 divisions (one on appeal) for illegal payments to players under the previous board, our chairman had also bet heavily on us losing at newcastle (which we subsequently lost 7-1) and used the winnings to pay for the teams journey home.

Tottenham chelsea and west ham amongst others did far worse than us the following 2-3 seasons and all they got was fines.

The thing that stuck in my throat about it was the FA had made there decison before our play off final against sunderland which we won 1-0. They still let 40,000 swindon fans spend their f***ing money that day knowing full well the result meant f*** all.

Fair comment, still Swindon must fancy their chances next season if not this. Southampton will do well but I am just glad I am not one of their creditors, they and Leeds have made a bit of a mockery of our legal system, Portsmouth have made a complete joke of it.
