Buy three really good strikers (in this league around £1m each), get a decent manager and a good squad and you're up.

So if TB spends a little cash in the Summer and Gus gets the right men - we'll be there or there abouts.

Thank you, gents. It confirmed my suspicions that they abused the system and a 10/15 point penalty is not much of a deterrence.

I can't believe that we have such a well paid gaggle of clueless idiots at the FA and FL that allow such misgivings. Actually, I can believe that...

I think you need to look at the table again. Add the 15 pts and they would be clearly in the play-offs. As it stands, they need to win 5 games more than the 4 teams above them with only 14 games to go. That is a big ask. They could do it but I doubt it. If they don't, that shows the punishment was right.

How much will they losefrom not being in the Championship? £1m ish? Not a particularly harsh punishment if they have been 'cheating' for a few seasons. Money troubles don't tend to build up overnight. How much did they make from being artificially inflated above their (current) natural level?

Blimey, am I the only one here who's thinking we should make sure we stay up this season before worrying about who our title rivals are for next?

I know we've shot up the table after 3 good results, and performances have been better, no doubt. But we're not out of the woods just yet...

Is the correct answer.

Even if we do get some success next season, and Leeds & Norwich go up this season - that still leaves teams with money like Charlton, Peterboro, MK Dons etc. Add to that there's a good chance Sheff Weds or (dare I say it) Palace will come down too. Play-offs would be a great effort next season if we do stay up this season

What about Notts County if they go up? Are they still backed by a rich consortium?

If Gus can have the sort of money Slade got in the summer then we should be serious contenders as well?
I'm sure Bloom will have been impressed with the players Gus has brought in and maybe back him with more clout?
Lets face it Slade has wasted alot of money on players that are not even on the subs bench.Apart from Bennett the rest have been poor.I still reckon Tunni has a future but Dickinson will be gone at the first sensible offer(Posh)

They didn't abuse the system because a new owner bought them. They went into admin under the old board. They just got lucky some rich guy wanted to spunk money on them!

So effectively Saints' point deduction could harm us by preventing us from getting promoted in a season when it'd otherwise have been likely?!

A superb result tonight for Southampton and that's six home wins in a row, probably too late for this season but I think they will be our big rivals next season for automatic promotion.

They won't be our rivals next year, as we will make the play offs this season & go up :falmer:

Certain they will go up next season. Will Leeds still be around? What will Palace have left in terms of players or new money? We will be there or thereabouts too.

My thoughts exactly! I think the last 3 seasons here have been the same. Huge amounts of preseason excitement about how Brighton are going make the playoffs followed by a grim and grizzly relegation battle that you have just about escaped (you haven't escaped this one yet).

Not quite sure how next season is going to be any different, esepcially with bigger teams like Crystal Palace and Sheff Wed potentially playing you.

Sorry. Couldn't resist it.

I remember DK saying at a forum the difference between League One and The Championship in terms of TV revenue was in the order of £6million.

All the delusional Saints fans I know think they're going to make it into the play-offs THIS season.

To be fair to them, they've got some class players now and Pardew seems to have finally got them to play a bit.

Why is that Delusional? They are playing really well, recently Beat Norwich away and are 14 points behind 6th with 2 games in hand on them. Look at there remaining fixtures, they only have to play Leeds, Swindon and Charlton (all at home) out of the teams above them.

Most seasons 76 points would be enough for the play offs. It will probably be more this year as the top 7 are far ahead of the rest of the division. Southampton can get a maximum of 86 points. Can they drop less than 10 points for the rest of the season? Seems unlikely. A record of won 9 drawn 5 over the last 14 games would probably still see them miss out.

On a side issue this year I suspect that the total to stay up will be less then 50 points too as it is so close at the bottom.
