I guess so...........................................but I seriously want our country to decide it's own fate and I guess, perhaps naively, NSC members may have thought that too........

Yes fair comment, but did you expect any different from NSC?
No more silly jokes from me, promise.

I think there is space on NSC for both the facetious and the serious, and that it's not the case that one is more important than the other. You carry on, I say.

Basically love or hate the EU, if you are an employee of any company or at least not the top boss. Many of the rights to time off, parental leave rights, maternity leave , holiday pay, wrongful dismissal compensation, maximum working hours, etc etc are all EU laws that are there to protect workers. The uk does have its own laws on these issues but they are vastly inferior and the EU are pushing and extending these all the time, also upholding them in their courts. If we ever left the EU, these rights and many others would disappear helping the race to the bottom on wages that we currently have. So in my mind, the EU can do its worst on united states of Europe and let Romanian gypsies in. My working conditions are vastly better as a result of my employer having to conform with EU employment laws. Many of the 'white van man' and working man on the street, cry about the EU all the time, unaware that their rights as workers are being protected and improved by the EU.

So if you want out of the EU, I say... Be careful what you wish for!

Not this white van man, I am self employed and I look after myself , what rights?.
Plenty of white van men exactly the same as me.

These employment laws don't apply to me or the many self employed. Parental leave??

Just wondered of you had a vested interest. Now I know you don't. You clearly believe in it.

No vested interest at all. I truly believe in it and the, on balance, benefits it brings.

Not the real one
To those of you self employed that have quoted me, I said if you are employed by a company or are not the boss in my opening line. Bosses hate EU employment law, hence the constant moaning from the right wing press. The vast majority of the workers in the uk are employees. Therefore their working conditions are better now than 20 years ago, due to the EU. Bosses admittedly have more hoops to jump through.

All the rights we want to keep the working man poor because he can't do overtime, needs a certificate for everything he does even though he can't actually do what he needs. The Uk starts to recover because of its flexible workforce, student workers at supermarkets are issued with 17 week contracts so that they can be dismissed after this period without any given reason. The EU has some sensible ideas but many, many ridiculous ones, but what it has robbed the working man of is ambition. The EU is slow motion socialism and is no good for this country.

Bollocks - let's start with the minimum wage then - not forced on us by the EU ! Under our opt outs employment laws passed by the EU are optional on us.
