Here is the following season's team Dorothy Stringer 1957

The lad holding the ball Micky Harris went on to captain London Boys and signed for Spurs during their glory days when he left school, before signing for Brighton.

November 73 - York City at Home - Clough's first game in charge

(There were 10,000 more at the game than for the previous home game!)

Ended 0-0

Powney
Templeman
Ley
Boyle
Gall
Sperritt
Bridges
Beamish
O'Sullivan
Hilton
Piper

I have no idea of the formation, or who lined up in what position, but assume Sully played on the wing, Gall at CB and Piper in Midfield...?

It would have been something like:

Digweed
Gatting
Young
Ramsey
O'Reilly
Smillie
Wilson
Penny
Connor
Saunders
Fashanu

Maybe:

Ryan
Biley
Ferguson
Pearce
O'Regan
That looks 85/86ish, which is when I started going regularly. My favourite team was the Barry Lloyd 87/88 team....
1. Keeley
2. Chivers
3. Dublin
4. Wilkins
5. Rougvie
6. Gatting
7. Nelson
8. Jasper
9. Bremner
10. Codner
11. Penney

Sounds about right, could be one or two wrong.
Looking at that mine should be the same, but I just don't think it is.
I have programmes with Ward named in the squad but to dismay I can't really place him in the team.
The same applies to a few others, although that midfield stuck around for a while longer, I don't think the same can be said of the defence and forwards.

I do, just about, remember Moseley taking over from Steele.

Therefore I'd imagine my team is the one after, that developed into the cup final team.

The game that really got me hooked as a fan was Portsmouth in the cup, a few years after my first match. Thanks to the absolutely fantastic website mentioned above, I can see that the team was as follows:

1. Mark Beeney
2. Gary Chivers
3. Ian Chapman
4. Dean Wilkins
5 Paul McCarthy
6. Nicky Bissett
7. John Crumplin
8. Andy Kennedy
9. Kurt Nogan
10. Robert Codner
11. Clive Walker

Something like:
Powney
Henderson
Templeman
Smith
Napier J
Gall
Wilkinson
Lawton
NapIer K
Turner
Armstrong

others were: Burns, Blackburn etc

Moseley
Ramsey
Nelson
Foster
Stevens
Grealish
Case
Micky Thomas
A Ritchie
G Smith
Robinson

Looks familiar - my first game was around New Year 1983 an uninspiring 1-1 draw v Watford. Peter Ward (back on loan from Forest) scored the Albion goal and I think the game highlights are on YouTube.

Sounds about right, could be one or two wrong.

Simple question why do people now adays, like commentators and radio people line teams up left back to right back when traditionally until recent years it was always listed right to left as the numbering showed. Johnny Cantor always does it.
