The Age of the Lizard dawns........ Match Report
BRIGHTONFANS.COM SIX-A-SIDE WINTER KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENT
Group A
AFC Lizard 6 - 1 Mejona United
The much anticipated first game for the newly founded AFC Lizard ended in a result that summed up the game perfectly.
Good early pressure from the moths was soaked up well by Mejona. The deadlock was finally broken after 10 minutes with a cracking goal from Vinyl Richie.
Mejona started nervously keeping three back which allowed the lizards plenty of room in the center of the pitch. This room allowed the build-up for a second goal, scored by jonnyboylennon.
Silky skills from the opposition looked fancy but didn't help them, with Crabtree and Chappers rock solid in defence.
Half Time 2-0.
The half time teamtalk by Mejona was obviously to become more physical as the tackles started flying in straight from the off. But the moths were more than a match for them with good challenges coming in from Safeway and Mark.
Mejona, sensing that the match was slipping away from them, pushed forward allowing a quick breakaway from Vinyl Richie to slide the ball past the keeper.
Immediately following the restart, the ball was lost, Brunning picked it up, ran the length of the pitch and smashed it in the back of the net.
Two goals in a minute effectively killed the game off, but still the Lizards were relentless. Chance upon chance went begging.
With the moths tiring quicker than their younger counterparts, Mejona's dainty footwork occasionally proved useful as they started having their first real shots on goal, allowing Albion Rob to show off his quality skills between the sticks.
The fifth goal came after a long string of passes, involving the whole team, set up jonnyboylennon to smash in a corker into the top corner of the net.
With about 5 minutes to go, a quick breakaway left Artois with just the goal and the keeper in front of him. Without a thought of going for the ball, their keeper charged straight into him, but Artois managed to keep on his feet to slide the ball into the net.
To their credit, Mejona continued their search for a consolation and with a minute to go, they got it. A good passing movement allowed them to get in a powerful shot, which went in the bottom corner.
Barely time for the restart before the ref blew for full time. The traditional handshakes went out of the window as Mejona immediately disappeared off into the distance muttering "Why does this always happen to us".
A very satisfactory result that will silence the critics and sets it up perfectly for next weeks big game against NSC Albion.
Come on you Lizards.
