If he scores an average of 2 goals every 4 games i.e 1 every other game with 23 goals how much would he be worth and how long would we be able to keep him even at his age.

What's his so-called market potential got to do with anything? This is someone who has signed a contract which he means he intends to be with us possibly through to the end of his career.

Who is going to buy out the remains of a three-year contract on a 34-year-old, especially when no-one was taking a punt on him before?

It's hard to work out where he was playing. He was mainly picking balls while counter-attacking, and mainly down the left. I'm not sure if Robinson was supposed to be on the left or upfront either. Revell was pushed out wide on the right (he didn't look happy about it either).

Point is, if Bas is put there to do what Revell was doing (win the balls in the air), I would say three things. One, Revell is doing a decent job of that already, two, Bas is not that good in the air, and three, it wouldn't necessarily improve Forster's game. Bas is best drawing-out and skinning defenders out wide. That side of his game ain't broke, so it shouldn't be worth fixing it.

Bas was playing up front yesterday, but going all over the place. For the first goal he was in the middle obviously and won the header, for the second he made the run down the left, and for the third he won the corner with a run down the right. If he's playing like that he has to play up front, because having him on either wing would just confine him. One of the reasons he so unsettled the Southend defence was that he was popping up all over, which of course helps create space for others.

For me, Hammond had an APPALLING game yesterday - the worst in the team by a country mile - and he had a pretty anonymous game against Northampton. I'm aware of the irony of the fact he has scored in both home games, and I'm delighted of course he scored the winning goal, but other than that, his performance was (and this is an over-used phrase I know) non-existant. One of the reasons Southend carved through our midfield was because Hammond didn't offer anything. O'Callaghan so often had to clear up his mess.

He dithered on the ball, he gave it away, he didn't win tackles. Harsh? Possibly, some might say that, but I couldn't justify his inclusion in the side at present if I were the manager.

As for Butters, I have no problem with the starting line-up of yesterday's back four. I just feel Lynch is wasted at left-back.

He wasn't good yesterday but if he's popping up with goals from midfield then he has to play

Apparently not match fit, which he wont be if he doesnt play I would suggest ideal to send him out on loan to a div2 or conference side for a month to get some games behind him.

Does that mean he's not fit? Surely not playing games means he's got more time to spend in the gym! I dont understand..... sorry!

Is anybody questioning his actual fitness? It is more a question of getting back into the routine of games and doing the business on the field, which he wont do unless he plays matches, which is why clubs use reserve games to regain match fitness. Unfortunately we do not have many of those so the only way he will get match practice is to go out on loan for a month and play 4 or 5 games.

I am not suggesting we would be looking at selling him but what I am saying is that as you said that was ALL he did score 2 goals which is what he was bought to do and if he does nothing else in the game that would be fine for me. I can accept that perhaps he could have scored 3 or somebody else could have scored one but if he scores 2 goals a game we will be promoted end of story.

I agree although I thought El Abd was equally poor. However Hammond does seem to be weighing in with goals even when playing badly so probably deserves his place as long as he keeps scoring. I say El Abd was poor and that is from an attacking perspective, he is undoubtedly completely pants when it comes to going forward, his distribution and passing are not very good although his defending at times is very good. The problem yesterday was that El Abd saw far too much of the ball from backwards passes and the ball going square across the back.

As for the team on Friday, i'll go with 227s selection.

What crap. Hammond has been one of our most improved and consistent players over the last couple of years and has scored lots of goals. Yes Saturday wasn't his finest hour but he still popped up when it mattered didn't he?
