Horsham
point number 2: 254-2. Great run rate - anyone fancy 400 by the end of the day?

I agree wholeheartedly. There a loads of teams in Bradford of very keen Asian yorkshiremen.
Yorkshire had the ruling of being born in the county for decades and questions were being asked back in the 80's when it was clear that Asians who were good were born in the county.
yes, that's the sort of thing I was alluding to... on a serious note, we in Sussex probably shouldn't be throwing any stones though as I don't suppose young Asians in Crawley and elsewhere have had a particularly level playing field over the years... (much better now but previous generations did get it badly wrong...)

I guess there could be some argument that any talent in Crawley could as easily end up at Surrey as at Sussex.

shouldn't really be the case as Crawley is very much part of the Sussex cricket set-up... may have been true in the past but Sussex now have very active development officers and the county junior squads contain several youngsters from Asian families...

But there again Sussex always welcomed players from anywhere and didn't have a bar on birth place.

But I would guess there are teams up there playing in the Surrey leagues as it is on the border.

the biggest clubs in the area are Three Bridges, Crawley, Ifield and Crawley Eagles... until recently Sussex showed no particular interest in engaging the Asian community in that area and tapping into the resource of potential players and supporters - fortunately that has changed...

indeed... :lolol:

I'm not saying we were/are as bad as the Headingley racists - but just that we haven't always been whiter then white when it comes to our own local Asian community...

Two of the Crawley eagles players that I played with came from Surrey Colts and I seem to remember that their winter nets were in Guilford!

St Francis Hospital had mainly Asians playing for them ( who were mostly doctors and helpers) That was a bizzare place to play

I have not had the pleasure of playing Crawley Eagles, but as they have chosen to play in the Sussex Invitation League for several years now I can only assume that probably reflects the location of a majority of their club members... I'm sure that Sussex have lost plenty of junior players from the north of the county in the past but hopefully that is changing now...

Rashid picks up the key wicket of Goodwin after tea... not looking like a trouble free march to 450+ now (if it ever was...)... I'd settle for a solid 400 and hope the Rashid wickets are an indication of how Mushy and Saqi are likely to fare...

what Headingly racists?

It wasnt racist that non yorkshire born people were not allowed to be selected, it was a policy that originally proved sucessful in making sure that local born youngsters had access to playing for the county. It was only the fact that throughout the country youngsters were not playing the game at schools and other counties were finding that by having overseas players they were filling the gaps left by the lack of skill coming through.

My father used to attend Yorkshire nets at Headingly in the 60's ( played one representative game for Yorkshire Seconds) and at that time, the leagues were full of overseas players - One evening he told me of a game where Charlie Griffiths and Wesley Hall were playing for a Bradford League side ( in what was called the Sykes Cup)
