Why does store bought veg go bad quicker than garden grown?

I'd guess one reason is because your homegrown veg is in your pantry within minutes of being picked and the supermarket veg has been out of the ground for days...

Can't believe this has got to page 3 without anyone questioning what the hell is a student doing worrying about vegetables

Surely the only reason a student needs a fridge is for beer storage and last nights pizza?
