Interesting, personally I think he will be shit in the Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles mode. Let's see if he manages as well as he seems to think he talks a game.

Paxton, do you seriously think Tottenham are a bigger club than Newcastle, more successful I'll give you, but bigger?? As for putting Spurs in the same sentence as United when talking about big clubs..well lol.

Over my lifetime (last 30 years or so), Spurs have definitely had a larger, more loyal fanbase than Newcastle.

...if you overlook the fact that Newcastle get about 52k every week and tickets for home games are a bit like rocking horse shit...when it comes to loyalty of fans the Geordies are in a different league to the majority of teams, Spurs don't even come close.

Can't agree. The Geordies might be queuing up for tickets now but I did say in my lifetime. Selected attendances from Newcastle's past:

1990/1991 Division Two (Old) 16,879
1989/1990 Division Two (Old) 21,579
1981/1982 Division Two (Old) 17,276
1980/1981 Division Two (Old) 16,001

???

I'm sure that if Tottenham's ground was big enough, they would also get 50,000 a game.

Certainly a club in trouble reporting massive loss increases and looking like they will go down. A complete shambles behind the scenes and no buyer wants to touch them.

As for Shearer good timing on his part. If they go down he can say the damage was already done and build the side back up from the Championship if they stay up he will be a hero.

If this is all true of course!

In my family it was always o.k. to play April Fool jokes until 12.00 after that it was unlucky... waiting now for the 12am news

Historically yes but in Shearer's time as a player and since? No way and Paxton was suggesting Shearer turned down the opportunity to go to a bigger club and then suggested Spurs were one of those clubs. Can't agree and I don't think Spurs have been anywhere near as big as Newcastle since the Premiership was formed.

Certainly since the Premiership was formed, Newcastle's gates have been very high but I'm old enough (sadly!) to remember many seasons before this when their fans were not so loyal (both home and away). Guess I've just about had enough of the hysterical rent-a-mob fans you always see on TV standing outside St James Park whenever anything remotely interesting happens...

By the way, I don't want to do PD's dirty work for him - his Spurscentric ramblings get on my nerves at times - but on this point I agree with him.

Got to agree with that. I'm sure one of our resident yids will come on and give some facts, but the only thing newcastle have over spurs is the size of their ground. Spurs have a bigger fanbase, better history etc, they've just been shit in the league for the last 30 years

the last time newcastle didn't have consistantly large crowds (ignoring the fact that attendances were nationally fairly low, and everyone was poor) was basically a generation ago.......the current 'crop' of newcastle fans are clearly passionate and loyal

people can use statistics from about 20 years ago as much as they like, the simple question you have to ask yourself is how many teams could achieve 50,000 gates when the team has been performing so badly?

not many other lower half premiership sides could, thats fo'sho

There's no denying Spurs are infact a bigger club than newcastle & have the larger fanbase, and a better history. But I never suggested we were as big as United.
