Dowie would be a better appointment than Shearer. They should swap jobs, if he does join.

I didn't think he'd have the balls to take over when they are in so much trouble, and risk his "hero" status.

He's in a no lose situation though. If they go down, it won't be his fault, but if he keeps them up, he'll become an uber-hero.

I know where you're coming from JH, but still seems strange to me.

why strange?

from the boards point of view:

-makes them more popular
-good move if they stay up
-higher gates

from his point of view:
-if he keeps them up=ultra popular
-if they go down he can walk away without it REALLY being his fault
-gets paid shit loads managing the club he supports

While I agree he is in a no lose situation, the thought just struck - if he walks away after taking them down, won't there be a backlash from the fans? I mean, if it's not his fault they went down why is he leaving? He should stay and help them back up!

perhaps there would be a backlash from a minority

but the geordies are a strange bunch, once you're in their HEARTS your in there forever, especially if you're local

he'd have to rape bobby robson whilst wearing a t-shirt that says "i hate jackie milburn and bob moncur, and keegan, gazza can f*** off aswell.....oh, and that shay givens a right twat" for there to be any backlash against him

i think he'll stay for a while anyway to be honest

Love this quote from Freddy Shepherd - obviously never one to let a good cliche get in the way of a deluded club based opinion...

"It's great news. Newcastle are in a fight now, they're in the trenches, and I think Alan is the guy to carry on that fight. No matter where you go in the world everybody wants to know about Newcastle."

So, Shearer is manager with Hughton, Calderwood and Dowie as assistants? Anyone who doesn't think Mike Ashley is investing enough will be truly silenced now! He's still got Kinnear on the pay roll too of course. Throwing money, rather than sense, at the situation if you ask me. But bold moves are what management is about, it's a brilliant appointment for Newcastle, whether it will keep them up remains to be seen, but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they did stay up.

Appointing Shearer as manager of Newcastle is one way of telling their fans they wont be staying up.
