Thatcher wasn't evil, there are far worse leaders in history with that moniker. She was however extremely divisive to society to the point where those that suffered the most were those least able to deal with it. How she considered herself a christian well, God only knows.

The right to buy had nothing altruistic about it. It reduced local government costs but above all it was a lame attempt at converting typical labour voters into Tory ones. We now have a housing shortage which has driven up the cost of buying houses. What should have happened is that the income from housing sales should have been reinvested in new stock but local authorities were, as far as I am aware, not allowed to do that.

As for her death, I won't shed a tear. The country will not mourn her, just the Daily Mail blue rinse brigade (and you don't actually have to read the DM to fall into that category!).

As for those living in council houses, in my view (which should apply to all benefits) they should be means tested, both in respect of financial ability to pay more rent and/or actually need of the size of accommodation.

i think its safe to say, given the split feeling and contentious nature of her legacy, there will not be a state funeral. theres no precedent for it. Churchill, who is the only ex PM i can think of given a state funeral, was an overwhelmingly popular and respected figure even with those who didnt care for his politics.

He also did other things like getting the Nobel Prize for literature and was a national hero. Thatcher is just some old deluded woman who wanted to be the queen.

The Pope and Margaret Thatcher are on the same stage in front of a huge crowd. ...

im sure it plays well to a certain crowd, but the joke doesnt really make sence. why would those that applauded Thatcher's wave, applaud the pope's punch? rather ignores a very large minority within "all the people".

I live in the middle of a council estate, all the cliches, jokes grumbles etc are completely true-i'd estimate 50% of people are screwing the system,it depressing when me and my missus do things the right way to set an example to our kids but never seem to get anywhere, whilst neighbours sitting on their arses live better than us

I am quite pleased with how this thread has gone, quite a binfest as expected.

But surprised that nobody has yet mentioned that fine piece of legislation from the daft bint, the POLL TAX.

I didn't think much of it and apparently some of her Ministers were not too keen too :lolol:
,

if the poll tax had been correctly sorted out , what could be fairer ,or put it this way in simple terms for you .
2 joe bloggs both married both with two kids both with a 3 bed semi ,
joe bloggs number 1 gets caught theaving at work looses his job , gets dole money , mortgage paid etc pays £ 400 rates per year
joe bloggs number 2 works hard does overtime puts all his hard earned dosh into an extension so builds a garage and another bedroom , his rates £450 a year , can you really tell me that is fair , but poll tax that would have been spot on

I know the odd anecdotal story only becomes the norm when a Daily Mail headline writer gets hold of it, but I did used to have a neighbour on a 6 figure salary who was paying a very low rent for his housing association house.

Fair play to him, but I did walk passed thinking it could probably go to someone more in need, especially as there is a severe lack of it.

What was wrong with the Poll Tax ? Why should individuals pay their way ? It was not as bad as many think and had it been introduced by a Labour government it would not have been so controversial.

The thing about the Poll Tax was it gave the rent a mob brigade the excuse to go out and act like the scum they are.

Why ever would Mrs. Thatcher want to receive a state funeral? Certainly private enterprise would do the job more efficiently, and at lower cost?

Perhaps her coffin can have corporate sponsors' logos on it, like an F1 car.

Because everything private is better than anything public, and none of us is truly free so long as any of us is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

This! :lolol:
