Right to Buy - Thank you Thatcher

I think that there was another point to the right to buy policy, which hasn't been mentioned so far, but is probably worthy of note. I always felt that there was an over-riding wish to cut council budgets, by selling off the houses the councils passed off the maintenance costs to those who bought them, thus making massive savings.

I think it is fair to say that some of the most challenging residents may have treated their homes badly, requiring regular repairs and re-decoration, this was the job of the council. Once the homes had been sold to the tennants these costs passed to them, they were no longer the responsibility of the council and paid for indirectly by the tax-payer. If anything right to buy was part of the Tory drive to reduce taxes, rather than some altruistic policy to increase the number of home-owners.

Don't get me started on that one. My parents had a three bedroom semi council house and (long story short) us kids moved out, mum died so dad was left in this large house on his own.

He asked the council to move him to a 2 bedroom flat/house as the house was too big for him and they refused to give him one. They said the only alterntive property he could have was a one bedroom flat. He used to do a lot of charity work for the RAFA and wanted an office/spare room so his grandchildren could stay over but the council simply refused his 2 bedroom request.

Outcome? He stayed put in a large 3 bedroom semi on his own. Utterly ridiculous.

I can see that, having worked for more than a few councils over the years I have a pretty low opinion of a lot of their staff. Wood, trees, can't see for the and so on.

As has been said a lot of the council house are large house with possibly 3 or 4 bedrooms that the people needed when their children were young but they have all moved on and left 1 or 2 parents in these large houses but who has the right to move somebody out against their wishes from a house they may have lived in for over 50 years. Different if they ask for a move then the council should be duty bound to try to accomodate them elsewhere.

you should bowl for England with spin like that.

your not wrong, and the last part is spot on. however, the fact there isnt a policy of downsizing people out of family sized homes, rather weakens the arguement of those who say right to buy denies places to those on the waiting list. when you stand back one realises there are plenty of problems with the council house model anyway.

on the subject of the council house scams/working the system, another one is "selling the rent book". I know a chap who done this and made several £'000 pounds, transfering the flat to the other person in the process who'd never have a hope through the waiting list.

At the end of the day Council Houses, unlike privately owned or rented accommodation are subsidised by tax payers. Therefore, as I have said before if you want to benefit from subsidised housing you should accept a more accurate means test so that if you have a house that is bigger than you need then you should be prepared to make way for somebody who needs that house a lot more than you do (as long as you are rehoused of course).

You want charity then accept some limitations if only for the fact it's selfish to deny somebody who's need is greater than your own.

I hope Thatcher dies soon.

Big party that day. She was pure evil.

What a ridiculously ignorant and horrid thing to say.

Anyone who was unable to make something of themselves under Thatchers Government must have been pretty thick, if you ask me.

Oh Timmy, that will bring you a lot of grief, what a stupid thing to say bearing in mind how many people lost their jobs while she was in charge. It's also a pity we had to have a war so she could stay in power.

You know why I dislike Thatcher ? Not so much for her policies but the way the condescending bitch used to speak. Gave herself all the airs and graces of somebody of high breeding which is bad enough but she was a grocer's daughter !

Strangely I quite like Carol Thatcher who must take ater her father.

Explain this, please ...

Who, in today's market, are these people living today in rented housing who can "easily afford to buy"?

And how?
The turkish immigrant who owns the kebabshop in haywards heath for starters, the one whos got a lovely spanking new council house on bolnore village , he doesnt park his shiny BMW there though.

Council homes were intended for those who could not afford to buy,By letting them be sold for a pittance the then government stole from the future. And many people saving hard for their own homes were gobsmacked to see people who could not initially afford to buy being "given" houses that they were lucky to rent in the first place whilst they had to pay the prevailing market price.

.
Not often i totally agree with you, but i do on this point .

Let us be fair, we should forget about the Thatcher era, it is over. Also when she dies if she gets a state funeral it will be a pisstake then every former PM will have to have one...

He's probably told the council he fled Kurdistan and came here claiming asylum , that would give him enough points to jump to the top of the list for a council house.

When she doe's pop her clogs there will be a small party attended by a few, most of the nation will be paying there respects at the state funeral she will have.

And that is the truth like it or not.

Why should the state pay. I would protest if she was given any such funeral.

I think they'll arrange the state funeral for a Friday as this will be declared a Public Holiday which means the country can go on a 3 day bender.
