I think they'll arrange the state funeral for a Friday as this will be declared a Public Holiday which means the country can go on a 3 day bender.

A public holiday for Thatcher, I'd rather work.

i think its safe to say, given the split feeling and contentious nature of her legacy, there will not be a state funeral. theres no precedent for it. Churchill, who is the only ex PM i can think of given a state funeral, was an overwhelmingly popular and respected figure even with those who didnt care for his politics.

Why ever would Mrs. Thatcher want to receive a state funeral? Certainly private enterprise would do the job more efficiently, and at lower cost?

Perhaps her coffin can have corporate sponsors' logos on it, like an F1 car.

Because everything private is better than anything public, and none of us is truly free so long as any of us is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Go out with your mates tonight, do try to enjoy yourself, failing that I am sure your GP could help.

Personally I think we should cut up the body and then float her on the stock exchange, should bolster manure futures anyway.

Forget the notions that the right to buy was altruistic or a method of saving on repair costs. The real reason was political, those that owned their own home were more likely to vote Conservative. Thatcher also wanted to diminish the role of local authorities in the provision of public housing and transfer it to housing associations by not allowing councils to spend their capital receipts on replacement stock. It's only in the past ten years or so that HA's have been anything like geared up for the task.

The day that Maggie dies will be like when Princess Di past away. Though half the country will be in mourning this time. IMO Thatcher was the best PM this country has had in my lifetime. Cameron doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as our maggie.

Spot on! Although I do appreciate that it's a "marmite" subject when it comes to personal opinions.

If she did it would be the first time a 21 gun salute was fired into the coffin!

The Pope and Margaret Thatcher are on the same stage in front of a huge crowd.

The ex-PM and His Holiness, however, have seen it all before, so to make it a little more interesting, Maggie says to the Pope, "did you know that, with just one little wave of my hand, I can make every Conservative in the crowd go wild?"

He doubts it, so she shows him. Sure enough, the wave elicits rapture and cheering from every Conservative in the crowd. Gradually, the cheering subsides.

The Pope, not wanting to be out done by such a level of arrogance, considers what he could do. "That was impressive, but did you know that, with just one little wave of my hand, I can make every person in the crowd go crazy with joy? This joy will not be a momentary display, like that of your subjects, but will go deep into their hearts and they will forever speak of this day and rejoice."

Thatcher seriously doubts this and says so. "One little wave of your hand and all people will rejoice forever? Show me."

So the Pope punched her.

I am quite pleased with how this thread has gone, quite a binfest as expected.

But surprised that nobody has yet mentioned that fine piece of legislation from the daft bint, the POLL TAX.

I didn't think much of it and apparently some of her Ministers were not too keen too :lolol:
