Don't forget that she told a Commons Select Committee that The Sun had paid police officers for information, apparently unaware that this might be illegal. So the incompetence defence would certainly have worked. And any editor who looked at some of the Sun and NotW front pages and didn't ask where the quotes and info had come from would be have to be supremely incompetent. If she didn't know hacking was going on, she should have. Guilty or unfit to do the job, there's no middle ground.
