My first recollection of Albion v Reading....when Pat Terry ran 3/4 of the Goldstone pitch to nick the ball off of Kit Napier, who was about two yards from the ball,Kit was a fabalous player but was a bit nonchalant at times.

Were Reading seen as friendly rivals in the 1950's and 1960's ? We've only hated Palace since the early 1970's who are our only bitter rivals

I don't think so, at least as Reading saw it. Can't say we had a special soft spot for you, but we liked most teams LESS, and there was respect allround.
Did you see the thread from 1976 - Does anyone remember: 3rd November 1976 ? - which really amazed me by how some of you guys remembered everything so vividly (I was just a wee teenager then!).

Happy Christmas all !! (may best win tomorrow!)

OK, Seagulls fans - TAKE A LOOK at this article- Amazing Steve Coppell Confession -

Steve Coppell Confession time!

He basically was situated in between "I didn't want to leave Brighton" and "I wasn't particularly interested in Reading"

Bigger rivals in the sixties and seventies than they are now - our paths seemed to cross more often than they have for some years

The biggest regret is that we were on the point of signing Shane Long and Kevin Doyle when Coppell left, of course when he went to Reading so did they.

So neither of them were reds then?

You seem to have a very narrow view on football emphasised by the fact you do not attend games live yet make petulant claims. Firstly I was talking about the season in general not the isolated incidents you focus on, secondly they could both be reds if the game was managed to the letter of the law. But in the right context neither was a red for the Albion player without the equivalent for the Burnley players, yes the first was probably a red following the letter of the law but if we apply this to every game we would end up with abandoned games or 9v9 on a regular basis use some savvy that's the sign of a good ref, and Barnes i still believe was only a yellow.

Very interesting! I've reproduced that on our site too ...

I've got mine framed and am looking at it right now. Ward, Morgan and who else on the photo?

There's Gerry Fell in the background I think. Royal Mail didn't want the poster printed until it was certain we were going up and it needed to be highly topical so it was printed at high speed. Pre-Photoshop days of course and anyone with a copy can see a bit of spot welding to the left of 'BN3' in the headline. It wasn't a big production and it's hardly cutting edge design but I remain disproportionately proud of it.

OK, at the end it fell to us, but it was never comfortable. The commentators agreed that many Championship sides present less problems than yourselves. Not sure why, but we had the ref decisions on the day, you could of least had a penalty. But look, there's a full half season to play for and you've been a cut above many teams to visit this year. So not gloating, just wishing you good luck cos you've too much talent to be involved in bottom of table scraps this season.

Thanks for your comments, you've been great, just confirmed my opinion that we're two teams who will be rubbing shoulders to get into the Premier in years to come! Best of luck, lads ...

Not actually true, Kevin Doyle was recommended to Reading by Pat Dolan, his manager at St Patricks Athletic, whose brother is Eamonn Dolan, our current academy coach. The first time Coppell ever saw him play was after a few too many Guinnesses on a scouting trip with our Director of Football, Nick Hammond. Shane Long was included as part of the deal, I understand that it was also on Pat Dolan's recommendation. Unlike many of our signings who had worked with Coppell in the past the Doyle transfer was a result of our scouting network rather than Coppell's personal recommendation.
