BBC Sport - Medical reports could see winter Qatar World Cup, says Fifa

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar could be moved to winter if medical reports show summer temperatures in Qatar would be dangerously high, a senior Fifa official has admitted.
Football's world governing body has always maintained that Qatar would have to make the request to move the tournament.
But speaking at the meeting of the International Football Association Board - the body that governs the laws of football - in Edinburgh, general secretary Jerome Valcke became the first senior Fifa official to say the event could be moved if they receive strong medical advice that it needs to do so.

I'd rather scrap all national teams. In my case it's club before country. Unless of course Sussex receives full independence by then....

I've been to Qatar half a dozen times, so here's my 5 penneth worth.

If the Qatari's say that they are going to build the venues then they will! They will be built on time and of the highest quality, the infrastructure will also be in place and it will be well organised, end of!

However, not only is it north of 40 degrees in the summer but the humidity is in the 80% range and it is a bastard, being outside during the day is not an enjoyable experience and is not for the faint hearted. The evenings are cooler but the humidity is still high and so very uncomfortable. The games may be in air conditioned stadiums but you still have to get too and from the grounds!

Qatar is more liberal than some of the other states, but it still abides by Islamic law and so you need to dress accordingly, going around in just shorts is not advisable as you are likely to get a bollocking from the police. At present if you were seen with a bottle of beer on the corniche in Doha you'd be arrested!

To give you an idea of what it can be like. The shopping centers have 'family days' where, as the name suggests, only families are allowed to shop. Single males are not allowed in! If you are out and about and get lost, don't approach a female for directions as this is not acceptable and you are likely to make the acquaintance of the local police.

I too have been there for work & it is definitely uncomfortable heat. 10pm & noted it was still 35c!
Its nowhere near as relaxed as Dubai yet & cant see the local authorities being able to be tolerant on a wholesale level at fans just being themselves as they'd be at home.
Its going to be a traincrash of cultures. Bad idea full stop.
There are some very strict laws for things we take for granted & there will no doubt be arrests aplenty for those that will go.
& the other thing.... Just hotels to go & drink in. A single shot of spirit cost me £17. That doesnt lead to a fun night out.

other than the football games & the hotels, is the shopping mall & Corniche.
I found out about a waterpark, but online reviews stated that it was crap & that you couldnt go unless with a family if you were male.

FIFA clearly trying to open a new angle on this as they know a summer in Qatar isnt going to work. but they also know that the major European leagues will never agree to 6-8 weeks (bearing in mind a training period) break in the middle of their season, even if it coincided with their winter break for some. so really how long are they going to keep up the pretense, and will who will they come crawling to as a replacement?

Although, fortunately, I could probably be able to afford to go to the world cup in Qatar I most certainly will not be going! Personally I think a lot of fans will stay away from that heat and persecution of cultural expression (as another poster said). I personally think that if the WC was moved to winter we should just pull out altogether. Not even play qualification matches.

And what are they going to do with all of the stadia once built? Even South Africa couldn't utilise theirs. Our Olympic Stadium lies empty. This is the maddest decision in sports history.

A Jewish Swansea player has been rejected from entering the country, what will they do if Israel qualify?

They are dismantling and giving them to countries in Africa or something

Awarding the World Cup to Qatar is a total scandal. The weather is a minor issue when you consider that visitors carrying an Israeli passport are not currently allowed in the country*, homosexuality is illegal, single women under the age of 35 are typically required to have a male escort and all women are forbidden to wear shorts and skirts. Everything about the decision stinks.

*Which makes me wonder what would happen if Israel qualified for the finals? Unlikely I know, but...

Yeah. I can see it now. Oil-rich Nigeria gets WC 2026.

Gods country fortnightly
The Qatar WC will probably get hosted in mid-winter and will probably be well run but it will be dull, but Qatar is hardly a country that warrants a WC, this is without doubt the most scandalous hosting decision in the modern era

Now if the 2022 WC should have been to Australia, now that would have been good...........

Was having this discussion tonight, the Aussie bid was blown out of the water despite meeting all FIFA's requirements on every single count over the Qatari bid. Much more of a scandal than Russia getting the nod over England.

A World Cup in Australia would've been fantastic, what a missed opportunity.
