But for 29 of our games our attack was as good as or better than our defence and our fullbacks were definitely part of the reason we did well in an attacking sense.
Pervis's stats really don't bear that out. One goal direct from a free kick, and one "assist" - a cross-field ball to Lamptey who had a lot to do to jink past the defender and curl one from outside the area vs Leicester.

He's a good player, a 'top half' Prem standard left back but hasn't played like a Euro-place left-back for 20 months. He could come good again, it is the season before a World Cup, so who knows?

FH mentioned defensive inadequacies.

I think TB/FH will look to really improve this with squad changes this summer, FB and possibly DM.

.... That's why I was surprised Lamptey got a new contract, ....
Just picking up on that point - he hasn't got a NEW contract (yet, at least) as far as I can tell. What the club DID do was activate their one-year option.

It is still possible he might actually sign a NEW contract later this summer, but it is also still possible he moves on (if another club comes in for him and is willing to pay for his services).

Not too concerned about him going, especially if it's for £40m. Good player on his day but very inconsistent, erratic more often than most and injury prone.

He looked an elite LB in his first season but not in the last two, bar the odd game here or there.
Agree and some of his decision making bares out the "fact" most footballers are thick.

Do think so. Fab and the club have been vocal about the extra year and having him in the squad.

There's other players we've taken the one year option and not made any comment. Assume they're on the way out.

Attacking output isn't just goals and assists. For fullbacks, that is usually going to be pretty low.

The way he helps us attack down the left hand side with his ball carrying, take-ons, forward passing and overlapping runs is key to our attacking success.

I don't think Pervis had the best season, but he was fine enough (certainly not a liability), played the 4th most minutes out of our outfield players, and covered a hell of a lot of distance.

FWIW, this is how he compares to other fullbacks in the top leagues for a few key stats.

And if people find mention here about poor defending either taboo or nonsense, they will listen to FH who in mid December highlighted it, mentioning collective and individual mistakes giving rise to our high GA stats.
I've been saying this about individual mistakes repeatedly when people are trying to throw FH under the bus for tactics.

Yes, FH has made some tactical mistakes too, Chelsea madness being the most obvious example, but some of our defending at times this season has, quite frankly, been schoolboy stuff. Players have to take responsibility for that.

During the poor spells I felt really sorry for FH. On the touchline he noticeably lost his verve, remaining seated as goals went in, I think he mentioned struggling to sleep? Welbeck revealed after the Brentford debacle:

“We made our bed and we have to lie in it. It's not good enough.

There have been so many of these performances throughout the season.

We need to play far more collectively. Fight for each other more. It was evident that we weren't doing that."

I’m positive the club/FH will look to improve us this summer, so that FH will get the personnel for his favoured formation and tactics. Players who want out will help fund this.

Yes totally, Pervis does a huge amount off the ball to help create space for Mitoma etc.
The trouble is that when he bombs up the pitch and we lose the ball he is often so far out of position. That's where FH has to get the defensive midfield shape sorted out.

Was it? You could argue it was the 8th best defence.

We conceded the 7th most goals, but that's not the same thing.
having a watched us all season there is no way an argument can be made for the 8th best . Even when we were steady we still looked all over the shop at times . Injuries didn’t help but I’m glad the club are giving surgery to the defence . It really needs it

Completely. I'm saying that claiming we were 8th best (ie in 8th place) is as ridiculous as saying we were 7th worst.

Our tactics exposed our defenders and at time our defenders weren't up to delivering on the tactics. It's not as simple as "our defence were shit".

We need to improve our pace at CB, need more depth at FB and our wingers/defensive MF need to cover our FBs when they are attacking. Then we can play Hürzeler ball with more consistency.

I like Pervis but he hasn't been the same since his injury IMO. I'd accept £40mill but would be equally happy if he stayed. It's one of those for me.

This is quite funny.

A player that has been a weak link for us for 2 seasons and we need to upgrade, wants to move to a bigger club 😂 What next, Ferguson handing in a transfer request because he wants to play in the Champions League?!

If Pervis genuinely thinks he’s better than us, he needs a MASSIVE reality check.

The club must be laughing. If the figure suggested for him is anywhere near realistic, we will have had an unbelievable result.

Unless there is a wider statement I haven't seen, reading that post doesn't say he's looking to move on to a bigger club, only that he wants to move on and continue to grow and improve.

Could be money. Could be ego. Could be he thinks he's bigger than the club. But could also be that he feels he's stagnating. Going backwards. Doesn't fit with the managers tactical approach. Is fed up being left exposed and making mistakes (as has been suggested by others here). Wants to go to a team with a type of play that allows him to excel again.

All I know as fact from the statement is he feels the time has come for him to move on to a new challenge.

Or he just wants to investigate alternatives, for which he seems to have the club’s blessing.

Maybe FH has been brutally honest and told him that he will not be an automatic first choice if fit.

I think the statement is pretty complementary in that he states the club has given him freedom to find an alternative club. Goes with our ethos of helping a player develop and not stand in their way if the right opportunity comes along.
However, what if it doesn’t?
I think Lamptey’s contract extension is a sensible move as although Ferdi’s preferred position is LB I’m not sure that defensively he’s up to it.
We’d have Lamptey as an alternative plus cover for Ferdi whilst he returns from injury and then time to find and bed in a new LB.

I think Lamptey's contract extension was just us exercising an extra year option, it's great insurance but we really do need a massive rebuild at full back. He can't string a series of starts together because of injury issues. Lack of consistency in our selection of defenders is exactly why we had the worst defence in the top 13 (in my opinion). I think he moves on if we sign KWP in a few weeks.

Ferdi and Velts seem like first choice to me at the moment. With Perv going, we need at least two others coming in, unless Barco returns.

Could be this......

Veltman
Kadıoğlu
Barco
Cuiabano/Diouf
KWP
