You ungrateful BASTARDS. Scholes gave everything to England when he playede yet people still got on his back. Yes he didn't score for a while but he brought other things to the games he played in.

IMHO he will be badly missed. The likes of Dyer, Joe Cole and Jenas aren't half the player Scholes is.

indeed. sorry to see him go. sure it'll please england fans who 'know best' though

i am shocked

he was fantastic at times for england, and we will miss him. but now it gives joe cole the chance to come into the team and show what he can do

I wonder if he'd feel the same way if the manager was Steve McLaren?

Puts a little bit more pressure on Rooney.

It is now time for one of Jenas, Dyer, Joe Cole or Alan Smith to step up to the plate and earn a place in the team. My money is on Jenas.

I'm with Chapman's and Partridge. It amazes me how blinkered people who have watched football all their lives can actually be. He didn't score a goal for ages, ergo he must be crap. Duuhhhr.

Stange decision from the ginger lad though. He's always had plenty of energy. I suspect some pressure from Taggart.

He's gone up in my opinion after they said on the radio that he only one of the Premiership players who doesn't have an agent.

Only as good as your last game etc.
If he doesn't do it, he shouldn't get picked anyway.
Yes, that goes for the whole team.

Like Mr Beckham and Mr Gerrard who both played SHIT in the Euros?

He also suffers quite badly from asthma and maybe that has contributed to his decision not to play in summer tournaments anymore. Must admit he does seem to suffer in the heat.

It's a game of opinions, sorry if I won't bow to people who thought Scholes was the bollox...I think he's just bollox...in my opinion!

Absolutely Gutted. Scholes is absolute quality.
Every international side wanted him in there side.

Anybody having a pop at him is clearly clueless.

Many thanks Paul Scholes

Ungrateful is retiring at 29 whilst still having more then enough talent to represent your country. We have an excellent squad more than capable of getting to the last 4 of the world cup - he could set himself up as a hero for life if we won it but is attitude seems to me to be 'sod that I can have an extra couple of weeks on the beach and maybe extend earning £40K a week for a year if I retire from international football.

If our players showed a bit more effort on the pitch rather than having hair styles like girls, moaning about the state of the penalty spot, advertising Fizzy drinks and spit roasting some slappers then maybe, just maybe, we might actually win something. Scholes it seems is endemic of the modern day Premier league footballers attitude. Greece showed what hard work on a football pictch can acheive. Pitty our players don't realise that.

Yeah, that's cool.

(Although there's not much point in having an agent if you're staying at one club).

It has to be said Scholes rarely played as well for England as he did for United - I don't see how anyone can argue with that. But to be fair to him, he's been consistently played out of position under Sven for years which undoubtedly hasn't helped. That said I thought he did ok in Euro 2004. He was excellent against Croatia and in the first half v France. Ultimately though you have to say he failed to deliver his club form for his country. But if anyone thinks Joe Cole is the answer, they're deluding themsleves. Cole is never going to be as good as Scholes.

I think he's made a mistake though... he should have given it one more go and retired after the next World Cup - if we get there.

There are a hard core of people who think exactly like you Chappers.

Beckham, Gerrard and Scoles should play , irrespective of form because of what they have been. We have taken this route for longer than I can remember. Every tournament we end up with the "old guard" who are always a disappointment, for whatever reason.

Sven is the only man for the job so we'd best keep him.

Etc etc.

Me? I'd go down the route the French took 8 years or so ago. Start from scratch and if it means missing out on a World Cup or a European Championship so be it. Let's build a team that is a squad that is interchangeable depending on the game with a manager who has some flair.

It'll never happen so you , Chappers, will never be proved wrong but I'm willing to bet that you NEVER see a World or European championship winning English team in your lifetime.

Ungrateful is also people playing their guts out for a team and still getting people saying you ain't good enough when you clearly are because you haven't scored for a while.

It's his life and his decision to retire yet you are still going to have a go at him. It's that fair?

What do you think about Shearer's retiremet?

What a crock of shit. Paul Scholes is a family man, not the sort to get caught up in front page scandals. If, as Clapham Gull suggests, he doesnt even have an agent, then he's the complete opposite of the average modern footballer!

Stop trying to double guess his reasons.

Fair enough but ireally don't see anyone knocking on the door that is good enough to take the place of Scholes. Sorry.

For the record I am fed up with Eriksson now. I take it that I'm allowed to change my mind?

The first thing I said when Rooney went off injured against Portugal was 'I wish we had Shearer on the bench now' If we had I'm convinced we would have won that game but he, like Scholes, decided to retire early.

Shearer to my mind is probably worse than scholes. If he really wanted to spend time with the family (as he suggested at the time), then he wouldn't be on Sky everytime there is an England game offering his expert opinion.

It will be interesting to see whether Scholes is all over the tele. I can't see it myself. Probab;y because he is a GINGER, no?
