England's Paul Scholes has retired from international football.
The 29-year-old played 66 times for his country, scoring 14 goals, but he has decided to concentrate on his club football with Manchester United.

"This is a decision I have not taken lightly," he told United's website. "I have been considering retiring from international football for a while."

Scholes made his England debut in 1997 and has played in two World Cups and two European Championships.

The midfielder said: "I started my England career in 1997 and have enjoyed seven years of great football, playing in the best competitions, with some of the best players, under the best managers.

"Euro 2004 was fantastic but afterwards I felt the time was right for myself and my family to make it my last England appearance.

"I would like to thank everyone at England for the wonderful years I had playing for the team and all the experience I gained. I wish them all the best and good luck for the future."

Sorry I thought you were joking then, had to go to the BBC website to confirm it. Should make selecting the midfield bit easier for Sven.

Probably realised that he was no longer good enough. Touch of the Andy Coles maybe?

But will it be Sven picking the team 80's Seagull?

For me Scholes never really re-produced his United form for England. He'll go down as yet another England player to never fufill his potential.

Little ginger twat!

What happened to wanting to represent your country?

In truth though, he's half the player he was & won't be missed.

Mumbling muppett! :salute:

Quite surprising new but Scholes hasn't been that good for the last few years, Lampard and Gerrard are much better at the moment

Unfortunately he probably will, because the FA can't afford to get rid.

As for Scholes, his England career started well but he has been very average for the past couple of years, and besides he never sung the national anthem (or shall we leave that can of worms well alone).
Wouldn't be suprised if Sir Alex had a bit to do with the decision.

You ungrateful BASTARDS. Scholes gave everything to England when he playede yet people still got on his back. Yes he didn't score for a while but he brought other things to the games he played in.

IMHO he will be badly missed. The likes of Dyer, Joe Cole and Jenas aren't half the player Scholes is.

He couldn't tackle without fouling, how bad is that for a midfielder. Not sorry to see the back of him

True. Also he didn't sing the National Anthem which makes him OK in my book. (Sorry 80s Seagull):D

Only as good as your last game etc.
If he doesn't do it, he shouldn't get picked anyway.
Yes, that goes for the whole team.
