How about this wording?
Due to gus not being in work for a month because of suspension, his scheduled annual leave was overlooked when planning a meeting, which has now been rescheduled for when he is back.
Or
Due to a human error in communication, a little confusion over dates, the meeting which has been rumoured in the press as Friday was never going to happen, it is and always has been, planned for Monday.
Or
Gus was prepared to cut short his holiday, but someone else who was due to attend the meeting was also unavailable/felt it would be more convenient, so everyone agreed to put the meeting off until Monday.

....that was a complete surprise to the club - "we never even knew there was a University over the road"... a club source said.
