But how did McGhee find about McShane in the first place. Did Fergie ring him up do you think? :lolol: How did we find out about Carole to get him in on trial? How did we find out about an Argentinian player being marketed in Italy? Dick Knight I think accidently discovered Reid in a reserve game, not sure about CKR :)

I would think MM approached Fergie out of desparation at his lack of success at finding a fit and good enough cd...

I do not have the answers re Carole and El Turi, but my guess is that MM asked his agent contacts to find him a striker and a winger for a trial... like he did with Molango et al last year...

DK definitely claimed some involvement in discovering CKR...

Simplistic enough to think that there are bills to be paid with that cheque book.
Clubs that have assetts are spending millions on players in this league. We cannot compete with that.

Errr... I do know we have bills to pay...

... and we don't need to compete with clubs like Reading... we need to go for realistic player targets... one of our problems is that we sometines aim too high... Sam Parkin, anyone?...

I wouldn't have Sam Parkin in the team if you paid me to.

Most of them, Reid had to switch because of injury, and Knight and Hammond have been moved in an attempt to address the midfield creativity problem, a problem you constantly whinge about, and now you whinge about the way McGhee tries to address it? :)

So 5 out of 11 players have played in the same position in 5 league and 1 cup games... consistent selection personified!... :)

BTW, I am not whinging about MM or his team selection... the man is a a great manager, IMHO (see my earlier post)... back to the point... success is more likely with a consistent team, IMHO... I'm hoping MM will find his best team soon... at the moment, not least because our squad re-building is incomplete, we are still experimenting... as stated earlier, we also need to have more confidence in our own abilities and act accordingly when we play games like Crewe at home...

We have a director of football already.

MM has a lot of contacts in football. We cannot compete with English player's wages (Argus sometime last week) and that is why we have been looking abroad at French players.

I know we have a director of footie!... just questioning whether we can justify his wages...

But who would Ernest have to hail as our saviour otherwise :clap2: :clap2:

I think the director of footie has earnt his pay with the young players over the past few seasons :)

But was it the director of football who brought on our youing players, or Dean Wilkins and the other youth team coaches?... personally, I think the latter (based on quotes of our youth stars)...

I would, but the point is we went after a player we couldn't afford...

You would think wrong. McShane had a few reserve games for ManU last season and it was playing in a game that his potential was spotted by us.

I've edited this because I misunderstood the point you were making. When did we make a bid for Sam Parkin ??? I seem to remember we might have made an enquiry of Swindon, but that's just McGhee covering his bases, hardly anything to criticise him for.

You could have fooled me - look at those two sentences there and tell me they don't mean the opposite thing :)

This is BRILLIANT.

BW makes the SAME point as Mark McGhee and he gets slated for it.

I thought the idea was we all had to agree with everything the club said and disagree with everything negative about the manager / staff etc. Now the manager has ADMITTED a weakness. Quick London Irish, please tell me what I am allowed to believe...

Quite clearly BW is right. We have gone after players we have no hope in getting, i.e. Parkin etc.

Is there perhaps a touch of the Tottenham Hotspurs about this? Could it be that the board etc are bidding for these players to keep the fans happy knowing fair well they wont be accepted?

That way they can say they tried to sign players and then trot out the excuses about Withdean etc.

And that damaged us how? :dunce:

Erm it damaged us because we waste time going after players we have no hope of getting instead of spending the clubs limited scouting resources finding lower league players that would actually like to sign for the club.

BUT

The club can claim to have been ambitious and tried to sign quality players knowing they had not got a hope in hell of them actually agreeing to sign and thus hide our inability to work effectively in the close season, pre season or start of season to sign the players we needed.

What, a phone call to Swindon damaged us, did it? Double :dunce: :dunce:

Tell you what, I'll stick 10p in the Alive and Kicking fund next time I'm in the club shop to cover the cost of the call :jester:

I would imagine mcshane was touted to mcghee by fergie because lets face it if i was mm i would be ringing Man U, Arsenal and chelsea etc to see if they were lending out players. As for Carole he was on trial at Southampton and i would imagine got recommended to mm by harry redknapp during there numerous conversations regarding blayney. Turienzo was recommended by an italian based former Juventus player who passed the info onto Brighton based Liam Brady, who correct me if im wrong played for juve for a time. Brady being a friend of the club passed it onto DK. Reid was discovered by fluke whilst watching iwelumo play for stoke reserves against Bradford. CKR was recommended to Dick Knight by a fellow chairman from a northern club whos team couldnt afford to purchase him at that moment in time. DK only acted on it when the coca cola money was won.

As for the rest of the conversation i believe that stadium etc play a major role in whether a player joins on loan or not. Though i would like to point out that any player taken by the club from the north or abroad are based at the hickstead hotel untill permanent accomodation is found.
