As recently as the 80s, the big 5 were Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, Everton and Man Utd. You are right though, Spurs fans moaned through the '90s because they weren't competing with three of those clubs, while they were overtaken on the pitch by Blackburn, Leeds, and even Newcastle. However, to their credit, their fans have always turned up in huge numbers - they still sell out every home league game and that has pretty much been the case since 1990. None of this armchair Newcastle/Chelsea/Leeds bollocks. They've always been there. At the ground. And that is why Spurs are a big club.

I suppose its all about how you define a big club.

It appears my problem with Chelsea is that they are bunch of chavvy two bob twats whose fans didn't bother turning up when they were shit. Even as recently as the mid 90s, Chelsea were getting 12-13,000 for Premiership games even when they were mid table.

So I take it you also have a problem with the success of Wigan, Fulham and reading then.

7,300 for Southampton in 1993, sandwiched between home games against Spurs and Man Utd.

I think they had been promoted not long before - again, in front of 7,000 crowds.

And let's add a few from the 1992-93 season...

Home to the Blades 31.10.92 13,763

Home to Man City 09.01.93 15,939.

Home to Everton 10.03.93 12,739

and suprise, suprise...Home to Spurs 20.03.92 the crowd rose to 25,157

So...Sunderland and Newcastle are as big as Spurs then if it's just gates. Oh and Villa too.

I think you'll find that under that criteria, Sunderland are considerably BIGGER than spurs.

When Blackburn won the league did that make them a big club then?

Spurs are always in that middle ground, similar to clubs like Villa or Everton. Not quite a big club but on the cusp. Spurs fans think they are bigger than this, like they have a right to win things. Well they used to anyway.

It appears your problem with Chelsea is they aren't one of the accepted elite.

Dont have a problem with Chelsea, just the fans who have suddenly turned up.

Why would I think spurs have the right to win anything? Ive seen them win two things since 91.

As for someones suggestion at Spurs fans being fickle, I would suggest just as fickle as Brighton fans.

But what about the Man Utd and Liverpool fans from down south? Nobody seems to mind them as much as the Chelsea fans who have come out the wood work. At least they are down south and lets be honest teams always get much better attendence if they are doing well.

You my dear Peter are actually a rather rational Spurs fan, its morre the older generation I am refering to.

Spurs are smaller than Man City, Newcastle and Everton and only just bigger than Villa and Sunderland.

The problem is Villa Park holds over 40,000 and they are not filling it.

In fairness to Spurs I think their average is something like 98% of capacity. Still they will moan about the other 2% not being used...

Big clubs maintain their support. Sunderland were averaging 18390 and Newcastle 21148 in 1991/92 and both are "single clubs" in their cities.

This is true, but the fact is that should they be doubling the crowds?

The bridge is a close to the MLS as you are going to get here.

Try getting two or three tickets together for Spurs for a league game, then do the same for Villa.

You will see how much harder it is and its always been that way even when Rory Allen was leading our Line.

Doubling is a lot, but this happens with success. As you know one of our mates is an Everton supporter purely because they were big in the 80's when he was growing up. Success breeds success (in other words enlarges fanbase). Well except in the case of Man Utd where an air disaster enlarged their fanbase.

I'm not sure the Glazers would agree with you there.

Newcastle and Man City average more than Spurs and are in the same league. When Sunderland were in the Premiership they averaged more than Spurs. You can bet your bottom dollar that if Spurs were relegated they would be getting crowds comparable with Leeds and Sunderland.

There is a top 4 or 5 with Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and possibly Newcastle and then there is a second tier with Spurs, Everton, Villa, Man City heading that. It's a sad truth for Spurs fans but they ain't as big as Arsenal and probably never will be in the future.

Like I said I really dont mind Chelsea, but as you know who I went to school with and saw everyone jump ship to support them it annoys me.

f*** me I was overjoyed when Spurs won the league cup, I bet half the Chelsea fans didnt feel half as happy as they dont have a connection with the club and watched them when they were shit.

I think all but one of those is lower than Spurs' average.
