Over there
Why are people still obsessing about Murray still? Another two threads about him! It's not as if we're stuggling without him we're in a playoff position for goodness sake.
I know people think we haven't been on fire up front this season (C.M.S lacking confidence and the ridiculous barracking of Barnes) but Murray would of added very little for us this season. As with other players, Gus would have had him in and out of the team, he would have stropped and moaned and been even more of a liability than he has at palace.

I believe Murray was told that he'd have to fight for his place just as it should be, and this was after the agreement that if he scored 20+ goals last season his contract would be renewed.
It has been said that Murray is "difficult", and his response showed him to be a prima-donna who believes he's the centre of attention and should call the shots.

That palace were silly enough to get involved was their lookout, but Murray had his head turned easily, and after using the politics to push for more money (like you do), he snapped up palace's offer. They were happy to get him off a 'renewed' rival and score brownie points with the fans, and on a 'free'.
Loyalty was zero, clearly. He was down South as a Northern lad and who cared which club shirt he wore. He probably saw Gus as a fairly uncompromising manager who wasn't going to bow to anyone based on their ego, and that he would indeed need to keep earning his stripes (so as to speak) to stay in contention in the first team.

He earned his right to contract talks, and palace jockeyed to pay his higher wage demands. They both somewhat mugged themselves!
I'd have to call this a bit of a result - karma if y' like.

I will predict that if palace have an iota of sense they'll try and recoup something by selling him to a Carlisle or Hartlepool or some League 1 club who might look at his record in that level and see it as a good punt. He'd do well to take that up too, but with an instant percentage of the signing fee, accept a lowered wage in accordance.
I doubt he'll make enough to retire early, but if he's set himself up and got a house and car all paid off, and enough to invest in a new business - then perhaps he can be fairly comfortable in the next 2/3rds of his working life.

For us, it all worked out okay and he helped us enormously in our promotion as Champions - but let's not forget Ashley Barnes who continues to work hard and score regularly even in this league! Our fans really ought to get behind him and support that guy now, we can't complain about Murray's LACK of loyalty and then be moaning at Barnes all the bloody time while he stands by us and keeps tucking them in.

:clap2:

Right here, right now
He still jogs around Preston Park with an Albion top on just to prove it.

Well do you seriously think he would jog around Preston Park in a Palace top?!?!

Might as well wear a shirt with 'kick me' written on it!

All it shows it that when he left he nicked some of our kit as well to prove his pikey credentials!!

There's some serious "woosh" going on in this thread.
Indeed. I've LOLd at Dick Knights Mumm's splendid comments on here.

As for the player himself. Well I think he'd have been good enough to play for this team, yes. He was the main man for us last season and scored a hatful. Granted, we're in a division above now, but his hold up play was seriously missed in that horrendous run before Christmas, and he'd have given us precisely the option that Vokes gives us now, only we'd have had it all season. I'd have liked him as a squad player, which would have meant we'd never have seen Billy Paynter and if his form had held up, probably not Sam Vokes either.

That said, it's all irrelevant. Clearly he was a problem player and anyway he wanted more money than we were prepared to offer. And I heard he spent more time with HR than the rest of the squad put together, so that disruption is surely not missed.

What "Murray void"? A void that would have contributed five goals? A void that has proved he just isn't up to the Championship?

The fact CMS cost £2.5m and has scored 11 goals is totally irrelevant to me. Maybe we need a different type of striker to play with him, but that doesn't mean Glenn Murray is anything other than a third division striker who had one reasonably decent season mainly because he was playing in an incredible team that used to carve teams open and create about 40 chances in every home match. The odd crafty touch that bamboozles some lummox from Tranmere or Yeovil does not score goals against Southampon, West Ham and Birmingham on a weekly basis. I don't rate Vokes as a top striker, but even he is better in that role than Murray in my opinion.
never thought I'd say it but cb is bang on this time.

Very much this. He's gone ... he's not coming back ... we're doing fine without him - get over it. Next.

We are doing better than I (and many others) had expected, but this has not been as a result of banging in goals. 49 goals in 40 games is very poor for a top six team - 16 goals in 20 away games is awful (only 3 teams in the division have scored fewer). We can thank our defence for being 6th in the table, not our strikers.

In my opinion, if we had kept Murray we would have scored many more goals and would be in an even stronger position in the division.

The most telling thing about this thread is the total lack of input from the Scummers. They were all over Murray threads a few months ago.

Anyone who abuses Glenn are idiots. We wouldn't have got promoted without him, he is one of the greatest strikers of the Withdean era.

I think Gus sent him there as a double agent. He's being shit on purpose, just to please us

I'd have him back in a New York minute. He is exactly what we have been missing this season. Would have been the perfect foil for CMS.

The reason he has only scored five goals is that he's playing for a poor team.

Our goal scoring exploits are not exactly anything to write home about this season. Poorest "goals for" of any of the top teams except Boro.

Absolutely this - in fact I'm not even convinced CMS would be here if Murray had stayed, for any number of reasons :

a) We would not have coughed up the £ 2.5 million.
b) Murray would have been seen as first choice given his record last season.
c) We only made the offer for CMS on 04th July 2011, AFTER Murray left on 20th May. Up until that point we had not made our intentions on signing new players anything other than speculative.
d) Top priority would have been to replace Elliot Bennett, who we knew had been on his way since the January transfer window, but opted to stay to the end of the season. That was done with Will Buckley.

Perhaps Hoskins was seen as the Murray replacement? CMS more of an addition...

Err, £ 2.5 million on a player who scored 35 goals last season for Posh and he's ' an addition ' !!!!!!!

Hoskins joined the same day as Murray left, that would be something of a 'panic buy' if he was meant to be a replacement.

Aimed at original poster.
Not much of a "LOL" when we're spunked the best part of 4 million quid on CMS and Hoskins, and dicked around with Billy Paynter on loan in an attempt to fill the Murray void, and not really succeeded.

Still think under Poyet's management a partnership of Murray and CMS would have been a lot more fruitful, but the chance has gone now. Thankfully though it doesn't look like Freedman can handle him and his sulky ways.

And CMS has been linked with a £5million move. He'd easily fetch what we bought him for if sold now.

However he's (prob) not gonna be sold and is def a class act. Difference with Murray and laughing at Palace is that he came from us and they were lgiving it large about that fact and now half of them want rid. That's the point isn't it?!

Agree with your post. Excuse my ignorance, what does HR stand for in this context?
