Given the devastation caused by 2 World Wars, the readiness of the Allies to help Germany rebuild post-1945 and the writing-off of war debt / reparations do the Germans now owe it to rest of Europe to provide much more cash for the bailout and help avert Eurozone meltdown?

Worthing
I don't think we can really compare our current economic climate to that of Wartime Europe, but saying that if one of the Huns offered me even a fiver, I'd bite his hand off to get it.

Yes, and all PAKIS should go home now that we've got the recipe for curry.

No not at all. In fact I'm not even sure they should bail out the greeks but it looks like someone has got to do it and they are literally putting their money where their mouth is.

What a ridiculous comparison.

The German and French people shouldn't keep piling more money in though, and would be better off asking the Greeks to revert back to the Drachma, as the Greeks lied and cheated in order to join the Euro in the first place.

Would it not be better if the whole of Europe just went back to having their own currencies one day. Don't think it would make the slightest bit of difference, everybody would still trade together. It worked better before the Euro.

Can I just say that I simply posed a hypothetical question for discussion? I'm not saying they should or shouldn't pay but this topic was discussed briefly on Radio Five Live this morning and they reported there are Germans who are seriously considering this question.

Pav you cheeky little minx. You fully know that the bailout is nothing to do with any 'moral' obligation but is instead all about saving their own hides.

edit: just seen your latest post. If people are considering this question it shows a complete misunderstanding of the nature of the crisis. But my short answer would be no, events of 60+ years ago should not have any bearing on their current decisions.

The main reason Hitler came to power and World War 2 happened is that we asked the Germans to pay £6.6bn in reparations. That is why we helped rebuild Germany post-1945 rather than bill them an amount they were never going to be able to pay leading to further unrest in an already decimated country. They had to live with the Cold War up until 1989 so I reckon they've paid their dues. Oh and let's not forget that they made their final reparation payment (from WWI) just under a year ago.

The Eurozone is a whole different matter, it was always a gamble to go into the Euro and it worked for the first 10 years but now we've seen the gamble hasn't paid off so they have to deal with consequences or make things worse.
