Moulding Generation Z
Black Country Seagull said:I read and hear all kinds of rumours, from Kuipers and White fighting before the coach trip to Southampton, to Oatway telling a friend that team spirit is the worst he has ever known since joining albion. Some rumours gather pace, others vanish, those that gather pace are further fueled by the inclusion of the press in what should remain confidental matters.
If you continue to stoke a fire it will burn, if asked why Kuipers was dropped, the answer is simple, he was injured or an internal incident has happened and is being dealt with. Full criticism of a player will have a negative effect some people, it can work positively for others. However numerous public attacks on numerous employees can only be poor for morale.
Hampshire Seagull, can I ask you what would you think if numerous numbers of your staff were unhappy or causing problems?
I'd look at lots of different things. It can be anything (with us) from duty rosters being changed to approaching deployments/tours, or it can be personal lives. We also have to be aware that some of the lower-level managers need assistance and encouragement if they are not to upset those below them. Similar in the way to using experienced and older members of a team to bring on the youth, we have to be careful that any negativity is identified and solved - bad atmospheres spread very quickly, and a perceived problem soon becomes a real one. Frequently, it can be something as simple as a misunderstood comment, or one of the lower-level managers misinterpreting something and reacting badly, exacerbating the situation. There are many reasons that things can go wrong, but as a manager it's our job to keep things as even and level as possible, ensuring that people can do their jobs with the minimum of disruption. I would also have to look at me, and see if I was disrupting the people below me with the things that I was doing or saying (but then again my manager would probably have identified that as a problem quite quickly). I would avoid, at all costs, going to an outside agency for assistance as this only puts a spotlight on the problems that may be there. There are reams and reams of books on this subject, so a thread reply won't cover it - suffice to say that I have been formally trained to internationally recognised standards during my career, and those above me are trained harder and longer!
