I love Weiffer, but comparing him as a right back to Dumfries is insulting to Dumfries! He’s levels aboveDumfries is pretty average in a back four.

I agree - what I was getting at is Mats might object more than Jack has to being deployed at RB given he has a Netherlands team place to keep. They have Dumfries. There’s no chance he gets a game at right back for them
Dumfries is a wing back. He is rubbish defensively. He excels at Inter because they have three insanely good and tough CBs.I love Weiffer, but comparing him as a right back to Dumfries is insulting to Dumfries! He’s levels above
Oh, in which case I misunderstood your post and you have a point!I agree - what I was getting at is Mats might object more than Jack has to being deployed at RB given he has a Netherlands team place to keep.
MidfieldI thought Mats had a really good game tonight but I wonder where he fits in when everyone is fit.
I think we will get in a first choice RB for next season and we do of course have Ferdi to come back too.
The midfield looks incredibly well stocked and I just don’t see him starting above at least 4 other lads.
Will he be that happy down the pecking order or be content as a back up RB. I like him but where will he play.
If Baleba stays, no chanceMidfield
Next to BalebaIf Baleba stays, no chance
That would certainly offer a strong screen in front of the back 4. I just wonder, do we want someone in that position who more instinctively gets up there? Look at the way Hinsh and Ayari drove forward and got their goals yesterday.Going to be a mainstay next season. Love to see him in midfield with Baleba.
If you look at the other side you don't need a professional analysis to assess our left back for decision makingIt would be interesting to hear a professional analysis for his performances as a right back. I think some decision making is questionable at times, but he does look like solid defending, tackling and passing.
I’ve been team Mats since before his recent uptick in form but had Salah scored that sitter it would have resulted from Gakpo getting the better of Mats.Mats and Hurzeler need to have a proper conversation about this. Is he going to be a right back, or fight for one of those midfield places.
My current guess is that he will permanently change positions at try to forge a career at right back. There's just going to be too much competition at centre mid. Mats has undoubted qualities, but is never going to turn like Baleba or pick a lock like Ayari.
But he has some of the qualities of a good full back. First, and the most important role of a full back is that he is hard to get around. Those go gadget legs come out and he can make the tackle. Second he has deceptive pace, probably not super quick off the mark, but can offer cover in a foot race. To his huge credit he hasn't been done by a winger so far. Interesting to see how he gets on against Son at the weekend, playing Chiesa was an easier evening than it might have been
OK, maybe once or twice by very good players. But no full back will win every contest. He's been consistently competitive against top PL wingers is probably the way I would rephrase itI’ve been team Mats since before his recent uptick in form but had Salah scored that sitter it would have resulted from Gakpo getting the better of Mats.
I think he 'gets away with it' as Hinsh did, just better. He's beastly strong & a very good footballer. Mats is a great backup but I'd rather see him in midfieldIt would be interesting to hear a professional analysis for his performances as a right back. The difference is a top level specialist RB has far less contests as their anticipation & positioning is betterOK, maybe once or twice by very good players. But no full back will win every contest. He's been consistently competitive against top PL wingers is probably the way I would rephrase it
Very fair - still have my doubts as to whether Mats is open to a permanent move to RBbut he’s definitely making a strong case for regular minutes.OK, maybe once or twice by very good players.
