...Dunk and Van Hecke are in line.
The Palace player gets a little bit of space on the left wing while Mateta makes a sprint in the middle. If the pass comes in this moment, Mateta is not offside, so Dunk needs to trace the run in case the pass comes.
From this moment until the ball finds Mateta six seconds later, Van Hecke does not take his eyes off the ball. He doesn't know what happens behind him (maybe partially because bad communication from Dunk/Bart?) and doesn't drop in a situation where he definitely should drop. Instead Van Hecke takes a step up to support Jack's pressure on the right side.
When Mateta runs into the space that Van Hecke leaves behind him, Dunk can't outsprint him on a 10m run. It results in a decent run-of-the-mill chance made to look "easy" or "cheap" through Matetas excellent run and finish.
The defenders are not on the same page and we can throw around the ball of blame. For me the main reason (apart from it being a very good attack from Palace) for the goal is Van Hecke not being aware of what Mateta & Dunk are up to. He gets a little bit ball watching, a short lapse in concentration. Shit happens, maybe especially after playing endless amounts of football this season like Van Hecke has.
I couldn't disagree more. He's approaching his mid 30's and has not looked after his body as well as other players who have played at a high level long into their 30's ( Ronaldo, Milner ,Bruno etc.)
Combined with our sharp rise in our level over the last few years, it shouldn't be a surprise that Dunk has declined below our requirement. The signs were there last season, and its been even worse this season.
Strong conversations between FH and LD will be needed at the end of the season. I imagine Dunk is professional enough to understand.
He played for England against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June.Picked for England squad.
Not playing.
I agree to a point.I couldn't disagree more.
Lewis Dunk may be on the other side of the professional hill, but many (not just your good self) write him off so easily and his incredible loyalty and service to the club.
If you take his playing ability first.... many players go in and out of form, especially after injury lay offs. Who could ever foresee Adam Webster (also written off) would come good again and be considered a first choice?
Dunk is a quality defender, not immune to mistakes or injury lay off form issues. He still has a place and is good enough for THIS squad even as we can all see he's moving towards the twilight.
And beyond the playing, Dunk is a leader, a strong influence and example to new and young players of which there are many, he's Mr Brighton and his contribution to all things non matchday and squad harmony is also a huge aspect of his importance.
Mateta scores a good goal and people really want to just bin off our Captain, Leader, Legend?
As someone who constantly tells us how much better you know every aspect of the game and indeed more so our game, many of us witnessed live how he basically stopped every f***ing attack in the last 10 minutes, please explain for us underlings? We score 1 goal in 3 games and now we're debating if it was the goalie or central defender who ruined our week (unless it was the manager who failed to make the world perfect).
Agree. It makes the Cashin purchase look a bit strange IMO.The one thing you can’t do with Dunk is turn defending into a foot race. It’s the one thing he’s never had, pace. Nearly all the CF in the prem have genuine pace and can maintain it with the ball. VH and Dunk both are not quick. The high line when we squeeze the midfield always leaves us open to the counter for a well organised attack. If we are going to continue with this tactic we need pace at the back. Or we adjust and don’t have such a high line.
If you let the action arrive to Dunk he’s brilliant, I just don’t think that’s the way FH is going to play or the way football is shifting too unless your forest.
For what it’s worth I feel more comfortable with Webster at the back, he’s just more mobile, he’s not a better player than Dunk but he’s quicker and good enough. Would expect a couple of young centre half’s to be purchased during the close season. Comparatively an easier position to fill then further up the pitch. Then we’re cooking with gas.

Not sure I fully agree that he's on thescrapheadscrapheap just yet but I must admit doubts have crept in about whether he's going to break the all time appearances record. A few years ago I was absolutely certain but with 134 to go it feels unlikely now.

Said on the matchday thread, I really wish we didn’t have to play him as it’s making me sad watching him lumber around the pitch making mistake after mistake. He’s so far short of the level required now and the difference in our record with and without him this season is quite stark now.Starting to feel sorry for him now.
