I couldn't disagree more.
Lewis Dunk may be on the other side of the professional hill, but many (not just your good self) write him off so easily and his incredible loyalty and service to the club.
If you take his playing ability first.... many players go in and out of form, especially after injury lay offs. Who could ever foresee Adam Webster (also written off) would come good again and be considered a first choice?
Dunk is a quality defender, not immune to mistakes or injury lay off form issues. He still has a place and is good enough for THIS squad even as we can all see he's moving towards the twilight.
And beyond the playing, Dunk is a leader, a strong influence and example to new and young players of which there are many, he's Mr Brighton and his contribution to all things non matchday and squad harmony is also a huge aspect of his importance.
Mateta scores a good goal and people really want to just bin off our Captain, Leader, Legend?
He played for England against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June.
I agree to a point.
Dunk has been a quality defender, and in many respects still is.
He has never been that good a communicator on the pitch, and that has been more evident this season, because Webster is, and because of our style we need communication along our back line for a lot of the game.
He actually seems better off the pitch leadership wise than on it from what I can see.
I do think Dunk has been hampered by the England call-up and largely missing pre-season, and just has never really caught up, then getting injured etc…
The Mateta goal is down to him, I’m afraid, even I could see what was happening in the ground, and by the time he reacted it was too late.
He will always be a legend in my eyes, but sadly even legends struggle at times.
As someone who constantly tells us how much better you know every aspect of the game and indeed more so our game, many of us witnessed live how he basically stopped every f***ing attack in the last 10 minutes, please explain for us underlings?

The one thing you can’t do with Dunk is turn defending into a foot race. It’s the one thing he’s never had, pace. Nearly all the CF in the prem have genuine pace and can maintain it with the ball. VH and Dunk both are not quick. The high line when we squeeze the midfield always leaves us open to the counter for a well organised attack. If we are going to continue with this tactic we need pace at the back. Or we adjust and don’t have such a high line.
If you let the action arrive to Dunk he’s brilliant, I just don’t think that’s the way FH is going to play or the way football is shifting too unless your forest.
For what it’s worth I feel more comfortable with Webster at the back, he’s just more mobile, he’s not a better player than Dunk but he’s quicker and good enough. Would expect a couple of young centre half’s to be purchased during the close season. Comparatively an easier position to fill then further up the pitch. Then we’re cooking with gas.

Agree. It makes the Cashin purchase look a bit strange IMO.

Whilst I don't completely buy into Aarons's dig at his form(written with barely hidden schadenfreude that Palace's pantomime baddy appears to be mortal), it's hard to argue that he's been at his best this season. For me, fitness has been a major part of this.
Its a tricky one for Hurzeler. One of the things discussed in Naylor's recent NYT analysis of our injury issues was the physical demands of playing his system. He expects players to outwork and outrun their opponents and it seems obvious that the older you get, the harder this will become. However, I'm of the view that our inconsistency this season has been seriously contributed to by the youth and inexperience of the majority of our squad. We've certainly lost points through naivety.
With the departure of Lallana and Gross last season and the injury absences of a substantial number of the senior players, leadership is starting to become a concern. More than one person said to me after the Palace games things like 'This lot just don't get it' and for the first time, I find myself wondering about who will be instilling the playing squad ethos to newly arrived youngsters.
It's a risk inherent in the business model. Chelsea's travails seem to have been in large part due to this leadership and identification with the club being absent. If the likes of Dunk, Welbeck, Veltman, Webster, Milner, March, Steele are going to struggle physically to meet Hurzeler's demands over a whole season, who is going to be setting the standards and expectations that Brighton players should be meeting? This is especially concerning if some will be joining with the expectation of our club being a stepping stone. The rumoured additional experienced head didn't seem to appear last summer and opportunities to draft in these type of players seem increasingly rare. Rarer still if they will be expected to meet the increased physical demands of Hurzeler's approach.
There's nothing wrong with expecting your players to outperform their opponents, but the limitations of this expectation shouldn't be solely physical. Adam Lallana struggled with fitness throughout his time with us, but his ability to come into a game and know what was needed, or how to increase the performance levels of those around him were commented on more than once by the likes of Klopp and Guardiola. Its a fine balance and we have to be wary of the physical demands of a system ruling out the use of players who have the intelligence and experience needed to control matches.

Starting to feel sorry for him now.
Said on the matchday thread, I really wish we didn’t have to play him as it’s making me sad watching him lumber around the pitch making mistake after mistake. He’s so far short of the level required now and the difference in our record with and without him this season is quite stark now.
