For my two pence worth on Lee Steele.....

He came across as bright and likeable on the Withdean Years DVD.

What he has said is dumb and embarrassing, but overall he seems like a nice chap.

I met him, despite his Scouse he was very well spoken. He's public school educated so quite eloquent. Just seems to me it's a feeble joke that some uptight saddo has decided to make a fuss about, there's a point where being politically correct looks foolish and this is one such instance.

Humour is all about context. It either comes from a good or a bad place.

Jim Davidson telling a joke, and Jimmy Carr/Ricky Gervais telling the EXACT same joke are two entirely different things.

Lee Steele does not come across as hateful (unlike Davidson)... just a bit of a mong.

I would suggest this is more being used as an excuse to get rid of him.

Agree entirely - handy moment to get him off the payroll. If the same comments had been posted by a 20 year old striker with a big future, who they saw as an ASSET, they wouldn't have been so keen to terminate his contract.

Of course, now they've set the precident, it will be interesting when someone more valuable to them does transgress in a similar fashion...

It's homophobic and insidious as it comes from a public figure (albeit a minor one, but one still with influence over some) and it continues the stereotype that no-man is safe from the sexual advances of a homosexual, something which is clearly ridiculous (esp if you're as ugly as Lee Steele), let alone offensive. I certainly don't think it's the crime of the century but my original reply was aimed at those surprised that Steele's been sacked for this. No surprise at all; if you or I put something like that on facebook or twitter we'd run a very high risk of losing our jobs if it was reported/picked-up. It's a homophobic remark = possibly illegal = brings your employer into disrepute. I do personally find it distasteful in its connetation but I'm not claiming offence on anyone else's behalf, I hate that.

Stop stressing about it all. It's just the way of the world. Women now have the vote, child labour is outlawed, no-one does jokes about thick Irishmen anymore and nowadays people scratch their heads and ask "did people really find comments about "nig-nogs/pakis" acceptable 30 years ago?"In 30 years they will be saying the same about homophobic comments like this one that Lee Steele made. Society is evolving and it looks like you are going to be left behind, no doubt left to moan about the 'PC brigade' and the good old days when you could call a black bloke 'a spade' (as long as you did it with a smile to let him know you were just joshing with him.)

I really think some people should get a life....The whole country is so pc it pathetic, you cant say anything without being accused of being either racist or homophobic or whatever else. Sure there are some mindless twats around, but make no mistake they will always be around and the more airtime you give them, the more they love it...But 99% of comments are harmless or taken out of context and it's effecting people's life. For f*** sake people stop being so touchy...Would it have been ok if he had said "lock up you daughters" in reference to someone who was a bit of a ladies man??....Seriously if gay people are offended by someone saying "i better padlock my arse"..then I think they are seriously uneasy with there own sexuality and dont know weather they are Martha or Arthur.
