There was a NI player I think who missed an international game because his gran died. Only that was the third time his gran died and this came out and he was getting stick. Turned out his partner had had a miscarriage so he wanted to stay with her but didn’t quite fancy sharing this with the media so made up the dead gran story.

My point is players can all sorts going on in their personal lives and it’s not our right to always know. Who in here hasn’t had a sub par day at work after some trouble at home? You don’t then have to explain to all of your customers why you had an off day.

I realise that since the post I’m quoting it’s come out that a bust up with JPVH occurred (perhaps over who’s the real JP!) and a lot of the above might not apply to Pedro.

Also the possibility that Van Hecke was at fault for the altercation - no one actually knows but Joao Pedro is the one getting the stick.
True. But Pedro has certainly reacted worse to it, not coming to Lancing, not going to the Awards, not making himself available - does seem a long way back for him unfortunately.

and yet I can't help feeling that all that doesn't square with the 'genuine personal reason for missing the game last night' that Bozza mentioned.

He's a decent player and has penalty ability is up there with the best in the world.
But when things don't go his way he shows he's not a team player.
Essentially we have players just as good in his position. He could do amazing at another club but for me I'd move him on we have players that suit our mindset and style better. I won't miss him delaying every counter attack personally.

There’s no ‘policy’, but it’s been pretty well documented the extent the club take character etc into account when recruiting.
You mean like the vast majority of clubs do, no one wants to bring in players who disrupt dressing rooms or who waste their potential and a club’s heavy investment because of nonsense. We’ve had players who’ve spiralled or who pram-toyed, it happens, our recruiters aren’t something out of the Minority Report

So you’re basically saying Pedro is staying ? (If no one will buy him)

Maybe he needed to go to Italy for some dental work

No I’m just saying it’s a bit of silly PR that some really do take over literally. And are therefore shocked when typical things that happen at every club happen here.

As for Pedro, yes I do hope that we don’t lose him over something as utterly trivial as this. Both players or any players involved should be told in the best diplomatic terms possible to grow the f*** up and get back to work

it’s not ‘normal’ this, at all.
Players don’t like each other. Players also have bust ups.
They don’t then go awol for two weeks.
Either he’s been way OTT and has been asked to stay away or he’s flounced.
Not a chance he’s here next season. JPVH is basically our future captain and Dunk is our captain. This happened with Trossard and Lallana- and Trossard was very quickly sent packing.

Which is exactly what Trossard wanted, he engineered his exit imo. Not YET willing to accept that is what Pedro is doing, although signs don’t look good reading between the lines.

I'm trying to piece together everything we know about this. We know he's been missing from training and didn't attend the awards dinner. We know he wasn't available for the Liverpool game for 'personal reasons'. We know he got sent off for lashing out last time he played, and that wasn't the first such incident. We believe he had a bust up with JPvH, perhaps reacting to a bad tackle in training, and is rumoured to have lashed out at Dunk in the aftermath. And we know that several trustworthy people on here were told that he was genuinely missing the Liverpool game for 'personal reasons'.

Putting this together I disagree that the only two options are he's been asked to stay away because he's been OTT or has flounced. The third possibility is that he does indeed have genuine personal issues, is in a very fragile state of mind that has caused him to over-react to bad challenges both in matches and in training, and needs time away from work and support from the club, family and friends, to sort this out.

You’re absolutely right. That’s definitely a possibility. Although the one thing I’d argue against that with is that surely Naylor wouldn’t be ‘asked’ to push this story? The club would know how this would look, the noise it would generate online etc. Surely the club would be pushing ‘just keep along the personal issues route’.

That's such an easy rumour to make up, I wouldn't give it a second glance. We get this kind of stuff all the time.

Problem is that 'personal reasons' is always seen as a euphemism, so no one believes it when there are actual personal reasons.

And everybody is so quick to get out their pitchforks, and it feels like many want to fit a stereotype to him - young, flair, Brazilian, braided hair - so must be sulky, arrogant, lazy, individualistic. Fact is he is a supremely talented young player still early in his football journey, who is one of our hardest working players this season (the shift he put in at Newcastle was amazing), was clearly respected enough to be made captain and whilst he doesnt always make the right decisions on the pitch (yet), the ability in his feet is clear to see. Passionate too, his geeing up the crowd would be lauded if it was Dunk or Hinshelwood or van Hecke, but in some bizarre twist it was used a stick to beat him with.

He hasn't been at his best of late, and the red card and near red card incidents perhaps speak to him having issues. But I expect to see him continue to blossom, whether here or elsewhere.
Oh.

He’s been a total bellend since Xmas and should have 3 red cards since then.

Just hope we will get £50m for him.

I think we have to assume that Naylor has some journalistic integrity and isn't going to bury a story just because the club have asked him to. We know he gets stories from the club, but he's not their mouthpiece and he will get stories from other sources as well.

Yes. But if that is the case he isn’t showing integrity at all. A journalist with a genuine, honest investigation into a players personal issues (which would be invasive and inappropriate) would surely write the story in a way that reveals that Joao Pedro has been struggling off the field which has lead to this incident among others.
What Naylor has actually written is:
Joao Pedro, 23, had been available to feature in the Premier League fixture at the Amex Stadium after returning from a three-game suspension but was absent from the matchday squad. Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler said at full time the Brazil international was missing due to “private reasons”.
However, sources with knowledge of the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told The Athletic Joao Pedro’s absence was due to an altercation with Van Hecke, 24, that took place in training during the week building up to the Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on May 10.
So either that’s the truth- he’s simply missing because of the altercation, or there’s a lot more going on with the player but for some reason Naylor has decided to dismiss that..
