I don't think that's right. The calculations are perfectly valid and they do 5 or so discrete calculations, one after the other. It's just that they aren't written down in proper mathematical fashion.

Of course that's the case. Unless there are brackets around addition/subtraction then multiplication and division is always done first.

There is only ONE boot at the bottom.

Although... That does not actually confirm the value of a single boot as being half that of two. There is no indicator.

The problem is ambiguous and inconsistent, ie. three horses are shown as three images, but two horseshoes are shown as one image. And that's ignoring the lack of brackets.

We have no way of telling the true value of one horse shoe or one boot as the previous sums have only given us the sum values of the symbols for 2 horse shoes and 2 boots, it is not necessarily correct to assume that those values are halved as they may have a different value that is never given making the puzzle in its current form impossible to complete
