You asked me to point out the contradiction in your statement. On the one hand you don't like to abuse people who disagree with you, yet there you go saying that some people are xxxxx precisely because they do disagree with you, and need to be told. Do they? You assume that you are obviously the one who needs to do the telling, which brings me back to what I initially said, that it reflects a certain degree of arrogance.
Two things: Firstly I said I 'usually' don't like to resort to insults when arguing with people. That implies there may be the odd time when an insult is necessary to drive home a point. (Don't tell me you never came across that in the Army!) So no contradiction there.

Secondly yes there are times when people need telling in blunt language that what they've said is unacceptable - but I didn't say I did the insulting, did I? My statement was in the passive voice: 'need to be told', not 'sometimes I have to tell them'. So no contradiction there either! (There are other posters on here who specialise in insults).

So please don't call me 'arrogant' just because I've disagreed with you. The only person being arrogant is you for the reasons more eloquently expressed by Easy 10.

Actually, I've never met him in my life. But that's the thing with messageboards, someone makes a post and others agree. Those that disagree can either argue against - or they can claim that everybody else are just members of a bullying clique.

I hope you will allow an oldie a moment's self-indulgence! I have just dodged the dreadful showers in Alexandra Park, Hastings and spoken to some super people, who were friendly and affable. I could not help but contrast that with some of the NSC respondent's contributions these last couple of days which are quite offensive to others. Yes, the situation at the Albion is causing stress and strain, but nonetheless, it would be really good if we could all avoid insults aimed at others:

They are invariably unpleasant.
They are almost certainly unnecessary and unsubstantiated.
With the degree of anonymity afforded by such a forum, I suspect that they in any case don't represent the "real you".
The insults display an element of unwelcome arrogance - calling others a xxxx simply because they hold a different view, does not reflect well on respondents.
By all means put your view across with vigour, and, yes, you may find it hard to see the opposite opinion, and there is nothing wrong with saying so, but it does not follow that he/she is a xxxxxxxx

I have read many erudite comments on here this morning, far better than I could put together, and long may it continue, but please let us all avoid wild insults that serve absolutely no purpose.
Many thanks for your patience!

That of course would be ideal, and who knows it might give a few 'food for thought'. I'd like to think so, but unfortunately although we all have a major common denominator (BHA) we cover a very broad spectrum of education, ideals, morals and more.
There are a number of course who bring poo to a thread to either bring attention to themselves (needy) or just to wind others up. However if you read between the lines there is often something of interest in their derogatory naff comments for no better reason than they usually say 'more about the poster' than they do their intended victim.

I agree with Hastings gull. We resort to insults too readily here. Obviously any Palace fans on this forum should get what they deserve. But we should respect each other, after all we have a shared love.

This is a football messageboard, not a tea room at the Womens Institute.

I'd agree that a line needs to be drawn at mindless insults and abuse for the sake of it. But if I want to call someone a COCKSMOKER every now and then, I don't see the harm in that. We're all grown-ups. Mostly.

The only thing worse than a dole scrounger is a moaning OAP that has nothing better to do with their time. Only the other day, I was on a packed bus when an OAP cheekily asked if I would stand up so he could sit down. He wasn't happy when I said no and pointed out that I had paid for my bus ticket and he had got his free.... What a cheek! not only getting free bus travel, he also wanted MY seat!

If the OP does not fall into the category of an OAP then I apologise.

Whilst I do sympathise with the OP - That is really funny

Fascinating how you now put a different and rather more personally flattering slant on everything, once things are pointed out. Of course I have come across insults before, by the way. You still maintain this arrogant veneer that some people need to be insulted at times, because you need to drive home a point - it needs you to do it to show others how unacceptable they are. Perhaps it might be you that is unacceptable. I am fully aware what the passive voice is, and of course you did not mean yourself at all, did you? All very convenient.
Please read my writings again and think first - I am not calling you arrogant because you disagreed with me at all - that is your right and is precisely what a forum should be about - I am saying to you that is sheer arrogance to state that some people need to be told(with insults) how unacceptable they are.

I could not agree more and some of the comments are quite sad. Yes, they do say more about the poster, and that is what is so sad. Yet, some of the more abusive posts presumably come from the same folk who would otherwise expect to be taken seriously, when Paul Barber reads NSC comments. For me the most poignant was the chap who wrote in to say that he knows, as do I, good people who do not contribute to NSC because they just can't be bothered with the inane responses they get. Fortunately, the majority are decent folk who contribute massively to this great forum and do not feel the need for sarcastic and unpleasant replies.
