From that screenshot, it looks like it might not even be seeing the sound chip. The details you have open is for Bluetooth Audio, which would use a different driver to the actual sound for the laptop. As has been said, your best bet would be to look for drivers on the HP website for your particular laptop.

You could also try and scan for new hardware. I think it's the magnifying glass on a screen icon in the Device Manager. That might find the sound chip and offer to install drivers.

I'm afraid you've lost me there! (I'm not brilliant at this sort of thing).
Generic advice below - if none of these steps work, you will need to provide more detail on exactly which model of laptop it is. It may look complex, but each of the steps below are straightforward -
If an HP laptop has no sound after a driver update, the issue is likely with the audio driver. Try rolling back the driver to a previous version, updating the driver to the latest version, or uninstalling and reinstalling the driver.

Troubleshooting Steps:
  1. 1. Roll back the audio driver:
    • Open Device Manager (search for it in Windows).

    • Expand "Sound, video and game controllers".

    • Right-click your audio device and select "Properties".

    • Go to the "Driver" tab and click "Roll Back Driver".

    • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. 2. Update the audio driver:
    • If rolling back doesn't work, try updating the driver.

    • In Device Manager, right-click your audio device and select "Update Driver".

    • Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software".

    • If a new driver is found, install it.
  3. 3. Uninstall and reinstall the audio driver:
    • In Device Manager, right-click your audio device and select "Uninstall device".

    • Check the box "Delete the driver software for this device" and click "Uninstall".

    • Restart your computer.

    • Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
  4. 4. Check Device Manager for errors:
    • In Device Manager, look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark, which indicates a problem.

    • If you see one, right-click it and select "Update Driver" or "Properties" to troubleshoot.
  5. 5. Run the audio troubleshooter:
    • Search for "Troubleshoot" in Windows and open it.

    • Select "Additional troubleshooters".

    • Run the "Playing audio" troubleshooter.
  6. 6. Check volume and connections:
    • Make sure the volume is turned up and not muted.

    • Check the connections of any external speakers or headphones.
  7. 7. Check for Windows Updates:
    • Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates.

    • Sometimes, Microsoft releases updates that can fix audio problems.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, it may be a hardware problem, and contacting HP Support for further assistance may be necessary.

Thanks for this.
In no. 1, there's no "Roll back driver" when I right-click. All the other options are there.
2. I've updated the driver and it says it's up to date.
3. If I do this, I'm worried it won't reinstall on restarting.
4. No yellow exclamation marks.
5. I've run the trouble shooter and it says it can't help.
6. All OK.
7. Checked for Windows updates. It said there was an update, which seemed strange since there was one this afternoon which caused the problem.
Just clicked on it. Lo and behold PROBLEM SORTED!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!
