Dear All,

After installing the latest update on my HP laptop, I've now got no sound.
An X has appeared covering the speaker icon on the right-hand end of the tool bar at the bottom of my screen.
Yes, I've turned it off etc, and researched on Google, but found nothing in language I really understand.
I've gone into device manager, and it says both sound things are working, but they're not.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Help would be very much appreciated.

Rather than turn it off and on - try 'restart'. This seems to be more effective at sorting these sorts of things. Worked for me when my sound suddenly disappeared, but still said it was okay in device manager like yours.

I tried that. Still the same.

Reinstall the correct driver.

Or......Linux ;)

Resting the cursor over the speaker symbol with the X, a message comes up saying "No audio device is installed".

Have you pressed the mute key by mistake?
that's a good shout for a laptop, try holding FN+key for speaker mute/unmute along the top.
other than that look in "sound" and "control panel > Hardware & sound > Sound for the settings there. the Device manager is pretty useless.

Edit: if its saying nothing installed, go with it and reinstall the drivers, download from HP.

Is there a driver you can download and install specifically for the soundcard?
I'm afraid you've lost me there! (I'm not brilliant at this sort of thing).

I think I've pressed the correct key to unmute, but problem still exists.

My ex girlfriend’s mum (late 50s) had a similar problem so asked me to fix it thinking I was some sort of IT expert. I’m not, but I am IT literate enough to be able to Google the issue and successfully execute returned instructions.

I am also IT literate enough to delete the porn from my browsing history before handing my laptop over to anyone. She, to my surprise, wasn’t.

Different laptop manufacturers have different chipsets built into their motherboards. It sounds like the latest driver update from Microsoft or your manufacturer contains a faulty update.

Head for the manufacturer’s website, go to support and drivers. Download the previous set of drivers for your laptop and the operating system you have installed.

If it’s a widespread error, a corrected driver update should come out in the weeks or months to follow.

It probably isn't this but... I've had laptop sound problems in the past and realised it's because the bluetooth has connected to a speaker or headphones that were previously paired.
