a decent "club" manager will not necessarily succeed at international level,what did the previous brazilian world cup winning managers win domestically or the french manager?

capello's cv at club level is second to none,but he spent day in day out with those squads to get it right,that just don't happen at international level

that's why clive woodward was so successful with the rugby team,country came before club,with the ridiculous amount of money in the game now,that will never happen

Ramsey, & Robson (not retrospect ... I rated him at the time, despite Euro88) were class, as well as Venables.

Ericsson was shocking, because he had a bloody good squad, and just titted about with money & ladies!!!
McLaren .... a terrible appointment, based on he'd working in the set up & Boro beat little Bolton in the league cup final.

Lessons to be learned from all this .... No Pearce (he's just another McLaren), and probably appoint Redknapp.

Can't say I feel strongly about an English manager, but do feel that a command of the English language before he starts should be a basic requirement. This is what f***ed me off about Cappello, who had the front to trouser his £6m a year and could barely be arsed to learn the lingo.

I agree. I've got no objections to another foreigner, but it would have to be someone like Wenger or Mourinho, i.e. someone who knows England, English football and English culture but hasn't had the misfortune of being brought up here. And as has been pointed out those two at least speak better English than loads of the natives. Capello was just TOO foreign, even for me.

I think with Redknapp we may have to lance the boil and appoint him. Otherwise for the next umpteen years we'll be subject to the same media bollocks as we were about Brian Clough: "Best manager we never had, if only the FA had appointed him we'd have won everything from the World Cup to the Eurovision song contest."

Harry Redknapp is the only man for the job. There is no other viable candidate. You don't need a massive trophy cabinet to be England manager.
